China’s Pony.ai said its overseas robotaxi pipeline has expanded to more than 4,000 vehicles, deepening the autonomous driving firm’s push beyond its home market.
The Guangzhou-based company, listed on the Nasdaq, is one of China’s leading developers of self-driving technology. Its overseas targets now cover markets in the Middle East and Europe as it seeks to broaden commercial deployment outside China.
Pony.ai has built its international ambitions through a series of partnerships with global ride-hailing and vehicle platforms. The company earlier agreed with Uber to place more than 2,000 driverless vehicles across European cities, a deal that forms part of the expanded pipeline.
The firm has also worked to move from pilot testing toward mass production. Its collaboration with Toyota aims to produce robotaxis at scale, while a separate tie-up with Tencent supports the software and cloud systems behind its autonomous fleet.
Europe saw one of Pony.ai’s first commercial launches abroad. Together with Uber and local operator Verne, the company helped introduce a paid robotaxi service in Croatia, giving it an operational base for wider European rollout.
The 4,000-vehicle figure reflects agreements and deployment plans rather than cars already on the road. Actual timelines depend on regulatory approval in each market, a hurdle that has slowed autonomous vehicle rollouts worldwide.
Competition in the sector is intensifying. In the United States, Alphabet’s Waymo has surpassed 250,000 paid robotaxi rides per week, setting a commercial benchmark that Chinese rivals are working to match internationally.
Pony.ai’s overseas strategy centers on partnering with established platforms rather than operating independent networks in each country. That approach lets it rely on existing ride-hailing demand while supplying the vehicles and driving technology.
The company has not disclosed a completion date for the full 4,000-vehicle deployment. Its next commercial milestones are expected to follow the phased expansion of its European and Middle Eastern services.
