ChinaCunchao and EPL: A Groundbreaking Soccer Collaboration in Rural China

In an unprecedented move that brings together the rustic charm of rural China with the glitz of international football, China’s Cunchao Village Soccer Tournament, known in Chinese as “Cunchao,” has forged a strategic alliance with the English Premier League (EPL). This partnership, sealed with a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) during the 2023 China International Fair for Trade in Services in Beijing, aims to promote the beautiful game of soccer at the grassroots level, while integrating cultural exchanges and socio-economic prosperity.

The Strategic Objective

The focus of this cooperation is multi-faceted:

  1. Training and Development: Both entities will collaborate on soccer training courses. Drawing upon the vast experience and resources of the EPL, the goal is to uplift local sports development in Rongjiang County, Southwest China’s Guizhou Province.
  2. Cultural and Economic Prosperity: Beyond just sports, the collaboration seeks to leverage soccer as a conduit for promoting social and cultural unity and ushering economic growth through tourism and related activities.

Although the full spectrum of the collaboration is still under discussion, the spirit of the partnership is evident: Soccer, with its universal appeal, is more than just a sport; it’s a medium that bridges divides, promotes culture, and fosters economic growth.

Cunchao: A Cultural Phenomenon

Spanning from May 13 to July 29, this year’s Cunchao saw 20 village teams clashing in 98 matches. The spectacle attracted an audience of over 1 million on-ground, and a staggering 50 million tuned in online.

More than just a soccer event, Cunchao is a cultural showcase. Each match offers a window into the ethnic tapestry of Guizhou as local residents present their ethnic customs during team entrance ceremonies and match intervals.

Promotion of such sports hinges on local villagers’ active participation, making them the heartbeat of the event. Wang Dazhao, a reputed sports commentator from Beijing, shares this sentiment. “To establish a robust sporting tradition in China, grassroots initiatives like Cunchao are indispensable,” he opined in an interview with the Global Times. Wang further highlighted the crucial role of systematic education, especially among children, and governmental support in amplifying soccer’s reach and significance.

International Recognition

Cunchao’s rustic allure hasn’t escaped international attention. Soccer legends like Michael Owen, a former luminary from Liverpool, expressed his support. A video message from him resounded with goodwill, “I wish Cunchao all the very best for the future.”

Anticipation regarding this collaboration is palpable among the local players too. Li Yuanpan, captain of Yuezhai’s village soccer team, articulated his hopes to see famed EPL star Erling Haaland play in the Cunchao. “I believe he will come, it’s just a matter of time,” Li projected.

EPL representative, Hu Zhaoheng, personally attended a Cunchao match in July and was profoundly affected by the event’s ambiance. He reflected, “Both EPL and Cunchao share a common ethos – to delight spectators through the sport.” Hu emphasized the EPL’s eagerness to share its expertise in event management and brand marketing, hoping that the partnership would further solidify with time.

Hu envisions a future where the EPL not only aids Guizhou in honing soccer talents but also collaborates on trade and investment ventures. This would strategically enhance the local cultural and tourism sectors, giving a boost to the economy.

Cunchao’s Rich Legacy

Rongjiang’s tryst with soccer is not a recent phenomenon. The 1990s saw soccer enthusiasts improvising open-air fields near rivers, using tree branches as makeshift goals. This marked Cunchao’s humble beginnings.

Fast forward to today, soccer is an integral part of Rongjiang’s fabric. As Xu Bo, the county’s head, reveals, of Rongjiang’s 385,000 residents, 50,000 either play or are aficionados of soccer. Every village boasts its own soccer team, and the county is home to 14 standard soccer fields. Rongjiang’s commitment to the sport is further evident as local school soccer teams consistently shine in provincial and state contests.

In Conclusion

This symbiotic partnership between Cunchao and the EPL is more than a mere collaboration. It’s a testament to the power of soccer to transcend borders, bridge cultural divides, and act as a catalyst for socio-economic growth. As the world watches, this alliance promises to redefine grassroots soccer, positioning it as a tool for cultural promotion and economic resurgence.
