On June 27th, an enriching Bicycle Riding Campaign was launched at the esteemed Royal Danish Embassy in Beijing. The event was graced with the presence of esteemed guests, participating bloggers, members of the Scandinavian Tourist Board, and many cycling enthusiasts who collectively ventured on a delightful ride to celebrate and promote Denmark’s revered cycling culture.
The central figure of the event, Danish ambassador Thomas Østrup Møller, ignited the spirit of the event with a captivating speech, encapsulating the ethos of the Danish lifestyle and its vibrant cycling culture. Ambassador Møller emphasized his firm belief in the integral role that cycling plays in promoting a healthy and joyful lifestyle.
He fondly quoted a popular Danish nursery rhyme, saying, “‘I’m happy with my bike’ — a simple, yet profound line that embodies how cycling is deeply ingrained in the hearts of the Danes, fostering an innate sense of happiness and contentment.”
The event was more than just a mere gathering; it was an immersive journey that led the participants on a cycling route from the embassy to Coznap in the Jiuxianqiao area of Beijing. This track, approximately 7 to 8 kilometers long, was covered in about an hour and a half, manifesting a shared experience of camaraderie, vitality, and, of course, the Danish love for cycling.
In Denmark, the bicycle is far more than a means of transportation—it is considered a best friend. The country’s cycling culture is deeply rooted in its history and lifestyle, becoming an essential aspect of its identity. With 11 national cycle paths, Denmark boasts a comprehensive network of routes stretching over 4,770 kilometers across the country. There are also numerous regional and local routes, signifying that there’s hardly any destination in Denmark you cannot reach by bike.
The event served as a fascinating cultural exchange platform, where the Scandinavian Tourist Board, bloggers, and guests collaborated to highlight Danish design aesthetics and the unique concepts behind their cycling culture. This was done in an engaging manner, sprinkled with intriguing raffle sessions designed to deepen people’s understanding and appreciation of Danish cycling culture.
Through this insightful Bicycle Riding Campaign, the Royal Danish Embassy in Beijing succeeded in offering a comprehensive glimpse into the essence of Denmark—a nation where bicycles rule the roads and hearts of its people, fostering a culture that cherishes health, happiness, and sustainable living.
