Chinese pop singer, Cai Xukun, has recently addressed swirling allegations concerning an abortion incident involving him and a woman referred to as Miss “C”. On his Weibo account, Cai confirmed a past relationship with Miss “C” in 2021, but firmly denied all allegations about forced abortion, involvement in illegal activities, and Miss “C” being underage. His responses, however, have garnered both support and skepticism among netizens, leading to heated discussions across Chinese social media platforms.
A week earlier, a paparazzo had accused Cai’s mother of hiring a private investigator to surveil a woman, alleging the installation of a concealed camera at her residence. The woman reportedly claimed a pregnancy resulting from a one-night stand with Cai and later, at his request, underwent an abortion.
Cai’s studio swiftly responded with a statement, declaring the initiation of legal action against the “forced abortion” allegations and other misleading statements to safeguard Cai’s rights. A series of lawsuits are reportedly underway.
The incident has sparked widespread reactions, with hashtags linked to Cai’s statement quickly trending on Sina Weibo. Many fans voiced their support for the pop star, leaving messages of encouragement on his account. Simultaneously, some followers expressed disappointment, accusing him of jeopardizing his future and career.
In response to the controversy, multiple platforms, including CCTV’s videostreaming service, Yangshipin, Beijing Radio and Television Network, and iQiyi, have removed content related to Cai.
The Beijing Advertising Association has also issued a cautionary statement for brands and entertainment agencies to consider “risk management” concerning their association with a male singer named Cai, presumably referring to Cai Xukun.
Meanwhile, Cai’s studio has been listed under “abnormal operations” on the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System due to unavailability for contact at its registered location.
Cai Xukun, boasting over 38 million Weibo followers, is the face of multiple brands, including the renowned Italian luxury fashion house, Prada. Despite the ongoing controversy, the pop star is proceeding with his 2023 world tour, with the Singapore leg slated for July 15th.
Gaining fame through the idol survival show Idol Producer in 2018, the 25-year-old singer has been a central figure of the Chinese boy group Nine Percent. Following the group’s disbandment, Cai has continued to release songs, albums, and participate in reality shows such as Keep Running.
