In 2021, one of the most influential Chinese television dramas, “The Age of Awakening,” captivated audiences, sparking a renewed interest among the youth in China’s revolutionary history. Now, these poignant stories have been reimagined for the theater by the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center. The adaptation, performed at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, is the culminating performance of its national tour and fittingly returns to where the stories of these young pioneers originated.
The narrative of “The Age of Awakening” revolves around the inception and evolution of “Youth” magazine, spanning the years 1915 to 1921. Through the lens of the play, the audience is invited on a journey alongside a diverse ensemble of Chinese intellectuals and aspiring youth of the early 20th century. The narrative profiles historical figures such as Li Dazhao, Chen Duxiu, and Hu Shi.
Actor Han Xiuyi, who portrays Li Dazhao in the production, shared, “I value Mr. Li Dazhao’s extraordinarily optimistic perspective on life. His poem ‘Youth’ commits to pursuing happiness, reinforcing that genuine success arises from approaching tasks with joy.”
The play vividly reenacts pivotal social movements including the New Culture Movement in 1915 and the May Fourth Movement in 1919. Beyond presenting the profound history and spirit of the Communist Party of China, it reveals the warmth and brilliance of human nature.
The sacrifices of these young revolutionaries, who dedicated their lives to their cause, continue to inspire the younger generation. Gu Xin, who played Chen Duxiu, reflected, “Modern youth embody a positive and open mindset. They aspire to carry forward the intellectual qualities demonstrated by their counterparts a century ago.”
Han Xiuyi encourages young people to witness the production, noting the performers’ youth parallels the young revolutionaries they portray. He said, “These characters were the pioneers spearheading China’s awakening. I believe a common thread binds them.”
The memorable storytelling of “The Age of Awakening,” both in its television and theatrical renditions, ensures the legacy and spirit of China’s revolutionary pioneers endure, inspiring the youth of today and tomorrow.
