Guided by Zhen Wei, the vice dean of their school, and the respected art and media lecturer Fa Sutian, students delved into the intricate realms of ancient Chinese traditional painting and calligraphy. This immersive learning experience was amplified as they roamed the halls of the museum, absorbing the nuances of iconic pieces exhibited in the “Cultivating Classics of the Flourishing Age-Great Series of Chinese Paintings in Past Dynasties Exhibition.” This tour provided them with firsthand insights into the vast and vibrant history of Chinese fine arts, the evolution of calligraphy, and the cultural stories they together weave.

The decision to hold the first lesson in the museum was deliberate and deeply symbolic. Zhen Wei explained the rationale behind this choice, stating that the museum environment offers students an immediate connection with the “continuity and innovation of Chinese civilization.” He emphasized that by witnessing and analyzing the emotions, values, and narratives depicted in genuine historical artworks, students are likely to grasp concepts more deeply and authentically compared to textbook-based learning. The tactile experience of being in close proximity to such artifacts offers a level of understanding that’s difficult to achieve through books and papers alone.

Fa Sutian echoed similar sentiments. He underscored the depth and length of Chinese cultural history, which is meticulously captured in the various artworks. He said, “Through the classic works of Chinese art, the experiences, emotions, and philosophical contemplations of past literati come alive. Each stroke, be it in a painting or a piece of calligraphy, serves as a portal, taking us on a journey across the vast timeline of history.”

This innovative approach to teaching not only ensures that students acquire academic knowledge but also nurtures a deeper appreciation for their cultural heritage. By bridging the past and the present in such a tangible way, Beijing Normal University‘s initiative reinforces the importance of understanding one’s roots and drawing inspiration from them, especially for those pursuing a future in arts and media.
