“Human Wings” Docuseries: China’s Ascension in Global Aviation

Throughout history, humanity’s obsession with soaring the skies has been evident. From the muyuan, a wood kite conceived during China’s Spring and Autumn Period (770BC-476BC), to the pioneering aircraft developed by the Wright Brothers over a century ago, this fixation has manifested through remarkable innovations. The recently launched Chinese docuseries, “Human Wings,” provides an enthralling visualization of this age-old aspiration.

The series offers a comprehensive narrative on the global evolution of civil aviation. While traditionally dominated by regions like Europe and the US, China’s meteoric rise and innovation in aviation technology is a central theme. The “giant jet” dream, once a distant aspiration, is now an embodiment of China’s prowess in the global aviation sector.

Director Cheng Yueping and his crew embarked on a global expedition to countries pivotal in aviation history – Russia, the US, Japan, and Canada – capturing a rich tapestry of stories, innovations, and breakthroughs. These diverse tales are seamlessly woven into a captivating five-episode narrative.

“Blue Sky Dreams,” the inaugural episode, dives deep into the story of Chinese aviation pioneer, Feng Ru. Celebrated as the “Father of Chinese aviation,” Feng’s groundbreaking invention in 1909 marked a seminal moment in China’s aviation chronicle. His plane, despite a humble flight of just 805 meters, signified China’s early strides in aerial exploration. Feng’s resilience, exemplified by his motto “Succeed, or die,” epitomizes the spirit of dedication and sacrifice foundational to aviation pioneers.

Yet, machines, irrespective of their technological sophistication, derive value from their human counterparts. An episode titled “Vertical Sky and Horizontal Land” delves into the myriad roles within the aviation ecosystem. From maintenance personnel to security staff, the episode underscores the importance of every cog in this vast machine, especially the often-overlooked training systems.

Highlighting this, a poignant tale from 2018 is narrated, where chief pilot Liu Chuanjian’s heroics saved 119 lives. The pilot expertly navigated a malfunctioning aircraft, averting a potential catastrophe. Such feats aren’t merely a testament to individual skill but underline the robust infrastructure and seamless collaboration in China’s aviation sector.

The series culminates with “Questioning the Sky,” spotlighting China’s ambitious endeavor – the C919. Spearheaded by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), this “giant jet” marks a monumental leap for China in the aviation domain. Having successfully embarked on its maiden commercial voyage in May 2023, the C919 not only showcases China’s burgeoning innovation but also poses a formidable challenge to Western aviation stalwarts like the Boeing 737 MAX and the Airbus A320.

Liao, an industry expert, emphasized the C919’s significance, stating that such innovations reinforce China’s global aviation stature and resonate deeply with Chinese passengers, instilling a sense of safety and belonging.

Reflecting on the series and the journey of aviation, Cheng remarked, “Generations of aviators have dedicated their lives to this noble pursuit. The duel between humanity and the skies is an eternal one.”
