Shenzhen, situated in South China’s Guangdong Province, has always been a beacon of cultural vibrancy. This tradition continues as the city readies itself to host the fourth edition of the Contemporary Theatre Biennial. Kicking off on November 24 and wrapping up on December 3, this 10-day festivity is set to be an enthralling experience for all attendees.

The festival’s program is nothing short of spectacular. Theater lovers can expect to indulge in 29 mesmerizing performances, encompassing a rich tapestry of classical reconstructions, avant-garde new works, and a blend of integrated theatrical arts. Adding to the event’s allure, 13 handpicked global productions will take center stage, testifying to the festival’s international reach and appeal.

This prestigious event is organized jointly by the Publicity Department of Futian District of Shenzhen and the public culture and sports development center of Futian. The baton of leadership for this massive cultural undertaking is held by Meng Jinghui’s Drama Studio, with the eminent director Meng Jinghui himself taking a pivotal role.

Director Meng Jinghui, a luminary in the world of theater, serves as the Art Director for the Biennial. His remarks during the press conference highlighted the event’s deeper purpose. He emphasized how the biennial offers young contemporary creators a platform not just to showcase their talent but to immerse themselves in the enchantment of art and truly resonate with the zeitgeist of our era.

Meng’s dedication to the city of Shenzhen and its theatrical landscape runs deep. His journey began in 2013 when he was designated as the Cultural Consultant for Futian. Since then, he has relentlessly worked towards making theater accessible to the common folks of Shenzhen, gradually transforming the city into a nexus for theatrical culture and innovation.

The Contemporary Theatre Biennial has the unique distinction of being China’s inaugural biennial exhibition that revolves around theater. Over the years, it has carved a niche for itself, emerging as a marquee theatrical event not just in Shenzhen but across the broader South China region.

One of the core objectives of the exhibition is to spotlight the newest and brightest talents in global theater. It paints Shenzhen as a critical catalyst in the ongoing cultural renaissance in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, bridging contemporary arts with a global purview.

In a bid to make the event truly international, artists from Hong Kong, Macau, the island of Taiwan, and several other nations have been cordially invited. Apart from offering a platform to globally renowned drama artists, the biennial is also deepening its roots in the community. Local students and Futian’s residents will get opportunities to engage with these artists, enriching their understanding of contemporary art. Furthermore, this year promises enhanced dimensions, incorporating performances, exhibitions, interactive displays, and literary readings, making it an all-encompassing artistic gala.
