Width of Realism: A Landmark China-Spain Art Exhibition

CultureArtWidth of Realism: A Landmark China-Spain Art Exhibition

In 2023, an emblematic cultural event marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Spain. Hosted at Beijing’s prestigious National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), the exhibition titled “Width of Realism – Contemporary Figurative Paintings China and Spain” presents a remarkable fusion of artistic visions from two culturally rich nations.

This grand exhibition showcases 109 oil paintings, a collaborative effort of 103 artists from both countries. Despite the diverse cultural backgrounds of these artists, their works are intricately connected through a shared commitment to a realistic art style. This style, known for its vivid depiction of everyday life, transcends cultural boundaries and speaks to universal human experiences, as highlighted by Xiao Minjun, a renowned Chinese art critic.

The opening ceremony of this event was graced by several dignitaries. Among them were Rafael Dezcallar de Mazarredo, the Spanish Ambassador to China, who underscored the exhibition’s role as a “window” for ongoing cultural exchanges and cross-cultural connections among artists. Jin Shangyi, a prominent figure in China’s contemporary oil painting scene, and Wang Ning, the head of NCPA, also attended, along with Fan Di’an, a respected art educator and former dean of the Central Academy of Fine Arts.

Ambassador Dezcallar de Mazarredo, in his address, expressed gratitude to all participants, emphasizing the multifaceted nature of cultural exchanges between China and Spain, extending beyond visual arts to include music and other art forms. This sentiment was echoed by Wang Ning, who highlighted the importance of artistic exchanges in fostering international friendships.

The exhibition’s journey began in Hangzhou in November before arriving in Beijing. Its curator, Cao Yiqiang, pointed out the distinct interpretations of “realism” in Chinese and Western art. It is this divergence in understanding and approach that allows for a true appreciation of the diversity and creativity inherent in the art world.

The collaboration for this exhibition was partly inspired by the interactions facilitated by the Beijing Forum for Performing Arts in 2020. This forum laid the groundwork for future collaborations, like the one between NCPA and the Teatro Real opera house in Madrid, encouraging a broader exchange of diverse art forms between China and Spain.

Supported by institutions such as the China Academy of Art and the Spanish Embassy in China, this exhibition serves as a testament to the enduring power of art in bridging cultural divides and celebrating shared humanity. It stands as a beacon of international cooperation, showcasing the rich tapestry of human expression through the universal language of art.
