CultureArtCultural Spotlight: Beijing-Style Drama and Lifestyle Sports Conference in China

The National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing is set to host a captivating Beijing-style drama, “Yinding Bridge.” First brought to life in 2015 by director Lin Zhaohua, with leading actors Ni Dahong and Shi Ke, the drama offers a unique glimpse into the lives of urban dwellers in Beijing. The play is a collaborative effort between Beijing Fenshuo Fruit Culture Media and Beijing Poly Theatre, showcasing the highs and lows of modern life in Beijing.

In December 2023, from the 6th to the 9th, “Yinding Bridge” will make its much-anticipated return to the stage. Zhang Lifeng, the general producer, expressed a deep connection to the play, particularly drawn to the character of Yu Wu, the protagonist. Describing Yu as real, clean, lovely, but stubborn, Zhang’s decision to bring back the play was driven by a desire to express his admiration for the character and the story.

Playwright Cui Shiyun, known for her expertise in writing musicals, embarked on her first playwriting journey with “Yinding Bridge.” Acknowledging structural and character development challenges in the original script, Cui highlighted the play’s rich musical elements, including a live band on stage. With her continued experience in musicals and collaborations with international teams, Cui plans to revisit and potentially rewrite the script in the coming year, bringing new perspectives to the storyline.

In a different cultural vein, the second China (Chengdu) Lifestyle Sports Conference is scheduled to commence on November 21 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. This event, with three new highlights, provides a platform for cultural exchanges and mutual benefits through various sports-related activities. The conference is set against the backdrop of notable events like the Chengdu Universiade and the Hangzhou Asian Games, symbolizing the growing fusion of sports with culture and tourism.

Centering on themes of “green, youth, health, and sharing,” the conference will address topics like sports venues, public health, community sports, and e-sports. The opening ceremony promises to be a highlight, featuring insights from Robert Rauch, president of the World Flying Disc Federation, who will discuss the evolution of trendy sports like flying disc from niche to mainstream. Boxing Olympic champion and world winner Zou Shiming will also share his experiences in lifestyle sports.

Chengdu, a city influential in the domestic e-sports industry, is rapidly establishing itself as the “Chinese E-sports Culture Capital.” Hosting various international e-sports competitions, the conference is expected to unveil major e-sports projects, further cementing Chengdu’s status in this domain.

Both events, the Beijing-style drama “Yinding Bridge” and the China Lifestyle Sports Conference, represent the dynamic interplay of culture, arts, and sports in China, showcasing the country’s dedication to cultural enrichment and lifestyle trends.
