CultureAktobe Region Shines at Beijing Event: Forging Sino-Kazakh Cultural Ties

The “Visit Aktobe” event, held in Beijing on Wednesday, marked a significant step in cultural exchange and tourism promotion between China and Kazakhstan. This event, a precursor to the much-anticipated 2024 Kazakhstan tourism year in China, offered a captivating glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of the Aktobe region in Kazakhstan. The gathering drew an array of guests from China’s tourism industry, diplomats from the Embassy of Kazakhstan in China, and members of both Chinese and Kazakh media.

Karataev Zhasulan, advisor to the Akim of the Aktobe region, highlighted the importance of tourism as a cornerstone for deepening mutual understanding and cooperation between China and Kazakhstan. The event came at a crucial time, as 2022 marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations. A joint statement reflecting on the past three decades of fruitful bilateral cooperation underscored the bright future ahead for the two countries.

A significant development in these growing ties was the mutual visa exemption agreement signed by China and Kazakhstan in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, in May 2023. This agreement is poised to bolster confidence and hope in mutual cooperation, further enriching the relationship between the two nations.

The “Visit Aktobe” event was a cultural feast, with Kazakh traditional music setting the tone. Baixue, a Kazakh volunteer studying at Renmin University of China, along with tourism staff, guided visitors through six booths showcasing the finest of Kazakhstani craftsmanship. From chocolates and carpets to embroidery and pearls, the range of items on display highlighted the artistic and cultural heritage of Kazakhstan.

Aktobe region has developed over 30 tourism routes, and 12 magnificent venues were featured at the reception, including the Mute Village, the Wolf Waterfall, and Barkyn Sands. These sites exemplify the natural beauty and historical significance of the region, offering potential tourists a glimpse into the wonders that await them.

The event also spotlighted the work of Kazakh jewelry artist Bolat Atraubaev. His distinctive creations, crafted from silver, gold, and gemstones, included various exquisite handmade works like bracelets and rings inlaid with onyx. A silver ring, drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese architecture, particularly captivated the audience. Atraubaev’s use of red, a color of fortune and beauty in both Chinese and Kazakh cultures, underscored the deep cultural connections between the two countries.

In a demonstration of traditional Kazakh craftsmanship, UNESCO-recognized artisan Kap Bulbul presented handmade carpets, bags, and cushions adorned with Kazakh motifs. The event culminated in a splendid show that brought traditional Kazakh attire to life, recreating a piece of history on stage.

Looking ahead, the Aktobe region plans to host a series of activities to attract Chinese tourists, with the “Visit Aktobe” initiative also set to be held in Shanghai and South Korea.

In summary, the “Visit Aktobe” event in Beijing was not just a celebration of Kazakh culture; it was a bridge fostering deeper understanding and collaboration between China and Kazakhstan. As the two nations look forward to the 2024 Kazakhstan tourism year in China, events like these play a pivotal role in enhancing mutual appreciation and fostering long-lasting friendships.
