Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) made a major announcement on Tuesday, revealing plans for a new “Star Wars” film set to hit theaters in 2026. However, the release dates for the next three installments in James Cameron‘s blockbuster “Avatar” series have been postponed. Additionally, the studio has pushed back the scheduled release dates for two Marvel films, “Thunderbolts” and “Blade,” both of which have been affected by the ongoing strike by Hollywood writers.
According to Jon Landau, producer of the “Avatar” series, the filmmakers require more time to complete the third, fourth, and fifth installments of the science-fiction saga set on the fictional moon of Pandora. The original release date for “Avatar 3” was December 2024, but it has now been rescheduled for December 2025. “Avatar 4” is slated for release in December 2029, followed by “Avatar 5” in December 2031.
Landau expressed that each “Avatar” film is an ambitious undertaking that demands time to reach the desired level of quality expected by both the filmmakers and the audience. He assured fans that the team is diligently working and eagerly anticipates bringing audiences back to the captivating world of Pandora in December 2025.
In addition to the “Avatar” news, a new “Star Wars” movie is scheduled for release in December 2026, adding to the excitement for fans of the beloved space saga. This will be one of two “Star Wars” films slated for release in that year.
The rescheduling also affects the Marvel universe , as the release of “Blade,” featuring Mahershala Ali, has been postponed by five months to February 2025. Similarly, “Thunderbolts,” originally set for July 2024, has been moved to December 2024.
However, there is some good news for Marvel enthusiasts as well. The release of a “Deadpool” sequel, starring Ryan Reynolds, has been bumped up and will now hit theaters in May 2024, earlier than originally anticipated.
These adjustments in release dates reflect the complex nature of filmmaking, as studios strive to deliver high-quality content while accommodating various production challenges and industry circumstances. Fans of “Avatar,” “Star Wars,” and Marvel can look forward to an exciting lineup of films in the coming years, albeit with some minor adjustments to the release schedule.
