Elevated Luxury: The Shinta Mani Mustang Hotel in the Himalayas

LifestyleElevated Luxury: The Shinta Mani Mustang Hotel in the Himalayas

In the heart of the Himalayas, a remarkable collaboration has transformed the tourism scene. Namgyal Sherpa, the proud heir to a legacy of trekking lodges, dreamt of elevating his hospitality brand, particularly with tourists beginning to trickle back into Nepal post numerous calamities and disruptions.

To achieve this, Sherpa partnered with renowned architect Bill Bensley, celebrated for his award-winning Capella Ubud in Bali, in search of a breathtaking location to develop. Bensley, in turn, believed that the best person to curate the hotel’s gastronomic journey was none other than Santosh Shah, the renowned chef who captured global attention after his MasterChef win, introducing Nepalese flavors to a wider audience.

Their collective vision materialized as Shinta Mani Mustang, a 29-suite luxury hotel. Nestled just outside Jomsom, the hotel offers spectacular views from 2,800 meters above sea level and is a mere stone’s throw away from Tibet’s border. This once isolated region, famed for the historical 14th-century capital, Lo Manthang, saw its visitor influx increase post the road inauguration in 2015.

The massive influx of visitors to Mustang, translating as the “Plain of Aspiration,” has over the years transformed the local economy. As Jigme Singi Palwar Bista, descendent of Mustang’s royal lineage and now the owner of the Royal Mustang Resort, observed, the tourism boost has provided ample employment opportunities to the local community.

Namgyal Sherpa’s initial vision for Shinta Mani Mustang involved collaborating with Nepalese architect Prabal Shumsher Thapa. Thapa’s sustainable designs, emphasizing local sandstone, limestone, and volcanic rock, laid the foundational design. However, under the creative direction of Jason Friedman, Bensley was brought on board to refine the aesthetics. Despite making no structural changes, Bensley’s influence is evident in the revamped interiors, courtyard, and the terrace. The emphasis was on local sourcing and upcycling, with interiors showcasing native hues and adorned with regional touches, from yak fur drapes to Himalayan artworks.

What sets Shinta Mani Mustang apart is its commitment to redefining Nepalese tourism. The resort seeks to move away from the backpacker image and establish Nepal as a luxury destination. This is complemented by its dedication to corporate responsibility, evident in its collaboration with the Pasang Lhamu Foundation, aiming to uplift women and children in remote Nepalese regions.

For the luxury traveler, the Shinta Mani Mustang promises a wide array of experiences. From the local culinary delicacies to a wellness program curated by an Amchi, or Tibetan medicine expert, guests are invited to immerse themselves fully. Outdoor enthusiasts can partake in horse riding, rock climbing, hiking, cycling, or even archery.

Lo Manthang also beckons, with Bista’s Royal Mustang Resort providing a closer view of the ancient city. A testament to Mustang’s unique appeal, the Royal Mustang Resort is another luxury offering that emphasizes employment for the local community.

In essence, both Shinta Mani Mustang and the Royal Mustang Resort capture the spirit of Mustang – a harmonious blend of luxury and authenticity.
