Yang, originally from Guizhou province in southwestern China, is among the 295 million migrant workers in China who move to urban areas seeking better employment opportunities.
For migrant workers like Yang, rental costs in tier-1 or tier-2 cities, which typically range from 1,000 to 3,000 yuan (US$140 to US$420) per month, pose a significant financial burden. This cost can take up a considerable portion of their average monthly salary, which was 4,615 yuan (US$645) in 2022.
