Steve McQueen’s “Blitz” Brings Wartime London to Life Through a Child’s Eyes

CultureFilm & TvSteve McQueen's "Blitz" Brings Wartime London to Life Through a Child's Eyes

Oscar-winning director Steve McQueen’s latest film, Blitz, takes audiences into the heart of London’s WWII devastation through a child’s eyes. Long inspired by Britain’s wartime resilience, McQueen decided to explore the theme of the Blitz after discovering a photo of a Black child waiting to be evacuated, sparking the concept of seeing the era from a child’s perspective. The story follows George, a young boy sent to the countryside for safety by his mother, Rita, played by Saoirse Ronan, yet determined to return to London despite the danger. The character’s journey, informed by extensive research and collaboration with historian Joshua Levine, brings to light the stories of diverse Londoners who lived through this turbulent period.

During WWII, the Blitz, which lasted from September 1940 to May 1941, saw relentless bombing of British cities. Many envision iconic scenes of Londoners in underground shelters, yet McQueen’s research uncovered the multicultural fabric of wartime London, with Chinese, Black, and other minority communities coexisting amid the chaos. McQueen emphasized his intent to represent London’s historical diversity authentically, saying, “I wasn’t trying to push some kind of narrative. It was just what one found within the everyday of London.”

The film marks a new experience for young actor Elliott Heffernan, who portrays George, and was only nine during filming. “It was a big adventure, being on my first film, seeing how films are made,” Heffernan said. For him, playing George was both a personal and cinematic journey, mirroring his character’s adventure through wartime London.

Blitz also presents a challenge for Ronan, who steps into the role of Rita, navigating her son’s evacuation while grappling with her own fears and love. Known for her versatility, Ronan embraced her first on-screen singing scenes, preparing with a vocal coach for months. “It’s the kind of thing I’ve always been terrified to do in front of everyone, but I’ve always wanted to do it,” said Ronan, who found confidence through the process.

McQueen’s meticulous attention to historical detail enriches Blitz, creating an immersive and moving portrayal of WWII’s impact on everyday lives. The film premiered in select theaters on November 1 and will stream on Apple TV+ from November 22, inviting audiences to reflect on resilience, diversity, and the extraordinary lives that shaped wartime London.
