Netflix is set to expand its dominance in the streaming industry by introducing a diverse lineup of Korean series, films, and entertainment shows in 2024. The highly anticipated Squid Game Season 3, the return of Culinary Class Wars, and the athletic competition Physical: Asia featuring Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao are among the highlights of the year.
Kang Dong-han, Netflix Korea’s vice president, emphasized the goal of making Netflix the go-to platform for Korean entertainment, unveiling a lineup of seven movies, 11 series, and seven entertainment shows. One of the most exciting additions is Physical: Asia, a new twist on the popular Physical: 100 competition series. Instead of 100 contestants competing individually, this season will introduce teams representing different Asian countries, with well-known athletes participating, including Pacquiao as a representative for the Philippines.
Another major return is Culinary Class Wars Season 2, the competitive cooking show that quickly became a global sensation. The series, which features renowned chefs facing off against skilled but lesser-known competitors, was the first Netflix entertainment show to rank first for three consecutive weeks. The success of its first season has led to overwhelming interest, with over 1,000 chefs applying to compete in the upcoming season.
Netflix’s Korean original series and films remain the platform’s strongest asset. Squid Game Season 3, scheduled for June 27, is undoubtedly the most awaited release, following the massive success of its predecessors. Another standout is When Life Gives You Tangerines, starring IU and Park Bo-gum, which is set for a unique rollout, releasing in four-episode batches every week from March 7 to March 28. According to producer Kim Won-suk, the series will showcase new sides of both actors, with IU bringing her signature charm and Park delivering an unexpected performance.
In the film lineup, Netflix is collaborating with Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón on Revelations, a new project from Yeon Sang-ho, the director behind Train to Busan and Hellbound. Other upcoming films include Netflix’s first Korean animated movie, Lost in Starlight, featuring Kim Tae-ri and Hong Kyung as voice actors, Mantis, a spin-off of the action thriller Kill Boksoon, and The Great Flood, starring Park Hae-soo and Kim Da-mi.
With an impressive array of Korean originals, Netflix continues to expand its influence, delivering fresh and innovative content to audiences worldwide.
