Stellantis Unveils STLA AutoDrive: Advanced In-House Autonomous Driving Technology

LifestyleStellantis Unveils STLA AutoDrive: Advanced In-House Autonomous Driving Technology

The Stellantis Group has announced the development of its first in-house autonomous driving system, named STLA AutoDrive. This advanced technology is set to transform the driving experience by allowing drivers to engage in other activities while the system manages the vehicle. Designed for both urban and motorway use, STLA AutoDrive supports autonomous driving at speeds of up to 60 km/h (37 mph) in city environments and 95 km/h (59 mph) on highways.

The system enables drivers to temporarily remove their hands from the steering wheel, providing the opportunity to watch a movie, catch up on emails, or simply enjoy the scenery. Activation is straightforward, requiring just the press of a physical button. Once engaged, the vehicle automatically adjusts its speed, maintains a safe following distance, and handles steering and braking based on real-time traffic conditions.

According to Ned Curic, Stellantis’ Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, the primary goal of STLA AutoDrive is to optimize drivers’ time by managing routine driving tasks. He emphasized that this innovation is designed to enhance the overall driving experience, making time behind the wheel both more efficient and enjoyable.

Stellantis, known for its diverse range of brands such as Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Opel, Peugeot, and Vauxhall, is integrating this technology across its portfolio. STLA AutoDrive relies on an array of advanced sensors to ensure precision and safety, even in challenging conditions such as nighttime driving or adverse weather.

On motorways, the system can operate at speeds of up to 95 km/h and features adaptive cruise control combined with lane-centering technology. This functionality helps maintain a consistent speed and safe distance from other vehicles while ensuring the car stays within its lane, providing drivers with a more relaxed and secure journey.

While Stellantis has not yet announced when STLA AutoDrive will be available on its production models, the unveiling of this technology marks a significant step forward in the company’s commitment to innovation and driving safety. As autonomous driving technology continues to evolve, STLA AutoDrive positions Stellantis at the forefront of the industry’s future.
