On July 29th, the vibrant city of Chengdu became a hotbed of camaraderie, friendship, and sporting spirit as it played host to an event celebrating Sino-Dutch sports relations. This gathering, marked by warmth and mutual respect, was centered around the Chengdu World University Games and was an ode to the growing sports ties between China and the Netherlands.
Held under the auspices of the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Chongqing, the event witnessed an influx of enthusiastic student athletes representing Student Sport Netherlands. These young athletes, brimming with talent and determination, had descended upon Chengdu to participate in the World University Games, each carrying with them the hopes and aspirations of their homeland.
The reception was graced by many prominent guests. Rob Cuppen, leading the Dutch delegation, and Wim Koch, his deputy, stood as stalwarts representing the Dutch presence at the games. They were joined by a formidable group, comprising more than 60 participants who would be showcasing their prowess in 11 different sports disciplines.
Huub Buise, the Consul General of the Netherlands in Chongqing, took center stage with an impassioned speech. His words encapsulated the years of collaboration leading up to this momentous event. Buise reflected, “After three relentless years of planning, preparation, and collaboration, the Chengdu Universiade has opened its doors, and competitions are underway. This fruition is a testament to the dedication of our delegation heads, official representatives, and every individual present here today. Being amidst this congregation fills me with pride and joy, and I extend my heartiest wishes for the competitions.”
Adding a personal touch to the event, Silke Jonkman, the chosen representative of the Dutch student athletes, shared her firsthand experiences. She painted a vivid picture of their journey in Chengdu, from savoring the local cuisine to the awe-inspiring sight of pandas and the grandeur of the opening ceremony. She warmly remarked, “The hospitality, warmth, and willingness to assist exhibited by the Chinese community has left an indelible mark on our hearts.”
Furthermore, Buise highlighted Chengdu’s pivotal role in driving the economic growth of western China. He lauded the city’s efforts in establishing itself on the global map and emphasized its rapid internationalization. He also expressed profound gratitude towards the Chengdu Foreign Affairs Office for fostering the spirit of friendship and cooperation between the two nations, acting as the bridge that binds China and the Netherlands in mutual respect and understanding.
