On August 26, the Guotai Cup Men’s and Women’s Professional Match Play concluded in Guiyang, Southwest China’s Guizhou Province. Chinese golfer Li Linqiang emerged victorious in the men’s competition, while Thailand’s Dussavi Soopimjit clinched the title in the women’s match.

The tournament began with 72 players, comprising 32 men and 40 women, vying for a share of the 800,000 yuan ($109,692) prize fund. All professional players who progressed to the formal matches received a portion of the prize money, with the men’s champion receiving 100,000 yuan and the women’s champion 60,000 yuan.

In a nail-biting final match that went down to the wire, Li Linqiang secured a one-hole victory over Liu Enhua after 18 holes of intense competition. This victory was particularly meaningful for Li, as it was his first match play event since turning professional.

“Participating in this event since turning professional was a rush of excitement, particularly during the opening holes against Liu,” Li said after the match. “The pressure mounted in the latter stages, but I’m elated to have pulled through.”

The chairman of the China Golf Association, Zhang Xiaoning, highlighted the significance of the event for the development of golf in the region. He noted that the Guotai Cup represented an effort by the China Golf Association to create new opportunities for players and to stimulate the growth of golf in Southwest China.

“Furthermore, this is the inaugural instance of a professional event being held in Guizhou. Through engagement with the local community, we aim to invigorate the growth of golf in Southwest China,” he added.

The Guotai Cup is a crucial part of the China Golf Association’s broader strategy to promote golf across the country and provide more opportunities for professional players to compete at a high level. By organizing events like these in regions that have not traditionally hosted professional golf tournaments, the association hopes to boost the popularity of the sport and encourage more people to take it up.

Overall, the Guotai Cup was a resounding success, showcasing some of the best golfing talent in the region and contributing to the ongoing development of golf in Southwest China. With continued support and investment in the sport, the future of golf in the region looks bright.
