Yuzuru Hanyu, the renowned Japanese figure skating champion, has announced his divorce on social media, citing intense media scrutiny and safety concerns as primary reasons for the separation. The announcement comes just three months after the figure skater publicly shared news of his marriage. Hanyu, 28, a two-time Olympic champion, expressed his decision as a measure to ensure the happiness and safety of his partner, who is not a public figure.
Hanyu’s marriage, initially announced on August 4, was kept private, with the identity of his partner undisclosed. However, following the announcement, Hanyu and his partner experienced an onslaught of media attention, leading to instances of stalking, slander, and unauthorized reporting. This intrusive behavior extended to their family members and associates, creating an environment of constant scrutiny and distress.
In a heartfelt statement on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Hanyu explained the challenges they faced, “Because of my limited experience of life, it was extremely difficult to keep my partner and myself safe under these circumstances, and I found it unbearable.” His management company also issued a plea for the press to respect their privacy and refrain from following them.
Hanyu, who retired from competitive figure skating last year, has been a figure of significant public interest throughout his career. He began skating at age 4 and rose to international fame after winning the men’s singles competition at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games. Hanyu made history as the first figure skater from outside Europe or the United States to win an Olympic title in the event. He further cemented his legacy by successfully defending his gold medal at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, a feat last achieved 66 years earlier by American Dick Button.
In 2018, Hanyu was awarded the People’s Honour Award by the Japanese government, becoming the youngest recipient at age 23. His decision to divorce underlines the intense pressure faced by public figures and the impact of media intrusion on personal lives. Hanyu’s statement reflects a poignant reality faced by many celebrities, where personal happiness and safety often come at the cost of public scrutiny.
