Oxfam Trailwalker Hong Kong Plans Expansion with Focus on Youth and International Participants

SportsOxfam Trailwalker Hong Kong Plans Expansion with Focus on Youth and International Participants

The Oxfam Trailwalker, one of Hong Kong’s most anticipated annual hiking events, recently concluded with an impressive turnout of around 3,400 participants. This figure significantly surpasses the 1,600 participants in the event’s previous edition in February, indicating a strong, renewed interest among the public. Michael Wong, the director of fundraising and communications for the event, expressed his deep appreciation for the participants’ enthusiasm and hinted at plans for the event’s expansion.

One of the primary goals for the future of the Oxfam Trailwalker is to engage younger generations more actively. “We believe that participating in such an event can be a vital lesson in resilience for young people,” Wong stated. He shared that the organization is looking to collaborate with various schools and youth-focused groups to encourage more young participants in upcoming editions.

Another significant objective is to draw in more international participants. By showcasing Hong Kong’s breathtaking natural landscapes, the Trailwalker could become a compelling attraction for tourists interested in outdoor activities. This strategy aligns with Wong’s vision of tapping into a market with promising growth potential.

While there are ambitions to expand the event further, the organizers are committed to conserving the MacLehose Trail, the route used for the Trailwalker. A “gentleman’s agreement” with the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) ensures that the maximum number of teams is capped at 1,300 to minimize environmental impact. “The event belongs to Hong Kong and is a vital part of the city’s cultural fabric,” Wong emphasized, highlighting Oxfam’s role as a steward rather than an owner of the Trailwalker.

The fundraising target for this year’s event was set at HK$30 million (US$3.8 million), a goal that Wong expressed confidence in achieving. This target follows the record-breaking HK$38 million raised in 2018.

In the recently concluded race, team TTR emerged as the first to cross the finish line, completing the demanding route in 12 hours, 42 minutes, and 47 seconds. Despite being slightly slower than the previous year, their performance was commendable. A notable achievement was recorded by the top women’s team, 8111, who set a new record by completing the course in 13:52:38, breaking the previous best time set in 2012.

Looking ahead, the next Oxfam Trailwalker is scheduled for November 15-17, with hopes to retain the finish line at Crossroads Foundation in Tuen Mun. The event’s organizers anticipate opening the application window with the government in February, continuing their mission of fostering community spirit, promoting physical fitness, and supporting charitable causes.
