Dutch football legend Ruud Gullit, during his recent visit to Tuen Mun, Hong Kong, stressed the significance of increasing sports involvement among the city’s youth. This visit, part of his involvement with the Laureus Academy, aimed to address the physical and mental health challenges faced by young people, especially following the stringent Covid-19 lockdowns.
Gullit, known for his remarkable career with the Netherlands national team, AC Milan, and later as a manager for Chelsea and Newcastle United, interacted with local boys and girls at a basic basketball court in Tai Hing Estate. He was shocked to learn that only eight percent of Hong Kong’s youth meet the World Health Organization’s recommendation of 30 minutes of physical activity per day. He advocated for the inclusion of sports facilities in urban planning, similar to practices in Holland, to encourage active lifestyles among children and adolescents.
The former Ballon d’Or winner and European Championship-winning captain, now 61, highlighted the vital role of sports in fostering fitness, concentration, happiness, and the ability to form respectful relationships. He pointed out the community-building aspect of sports facilities like basketball courts in densely populated areas with limited open spaces.
The Laureus Model City Hong Kong initiative, which Gullit supports, focuses on leveraging sports to improve mental health and social engagement among young people. Gullit’s visit is seen as an inspiration for local youth and program leaders, aligning with the Laureus Academy’s mission to use sports as a tool for positive change.
Reflecting on his career and advocacy work, Gullit recalled dedicating his 1987 Ballon d’Or to Nelson Mandela and his support for the anti-apartheid movement. Post-retirement, he continues to raise awareness about global issues.
Gullit also commented on the ownership of English Premier League club Newcastle United, where he was a manager in the late 1990s. Addressing the criticisms of sportswashing associated with the club’s Saudi ownership, Gullit suggested that there are double standards in how European countries view such issues. He praised the club’s recent achievements under manager Eddie Howe, highlighting their prudent approach to player acquisitions and overall team management.
