SportsChina's Basketball Greats Honored in 2023 Hall of Fame Inductions

The Chinese Basketball Association, under the leadership of President Yao Ming, has officially announced the prestigious inductees for the 2023 Chinese Basketball Hall of Fame. This honor, the highest in the country’s basketball circles, was bestowed upon a group of legendary figures and teams who have significantly contributed to the sport in China. The ceremony, held in Beijing, celebrated the achievements of these basketball icons.

Among the inductees was Zhang Weiping, a central figure in the men’s national team as a center/power forward, who led the team to three consecutive titles at the FIBA Asia Championship from 1975 to 1979. Alongside Zhang, other male basketball legends such as Kuang Lubin and pioneer Huang Boling, who mirrored Zhang’s achievements in the 1979-83 FIBA Asia Championship games, were also enshrined.

The women’s basketball legends honored included Li Shihua, Liu Qing, and Li Xin, as well as head coaches Chen Daohong and Liu Guiyi. These figures have played crucial roles in advancing women’s basketball in China, both on and off the court.

A special accolade was reserved for the 1992 Women’s National Team, led by head coach Li Yaguang. The team, featuring star athletes like Zheng Haixia, Cong Xuedi, Liu Qing, and Li Xin, achieved a historic silver medal at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Their extraordinary performance, especially in the semifinals against Cuba, remains the best record of the Chinese women’s team to date and a significant milestone in the nation’s sports history.

The ceremony also paid tribute to Liu Guiyi, who served as the men’s national team captain in 1953 and later as the head coach, introducing the “run and gun” style to Chinese basketball. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the sport.

In a unique and historical acknowledgment, the 120th Division of the Eighth Route Army Basketball Team, established in 1937, was honored. Known as the “Artillery Corps Basketball Team,” they played a pivotal role in boosting morale and physicality among troops during the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45). Their recognition underlines the profound intersection of sports, history, and culture in China.

The Chinese Basketball Hall of Fame aims to preserve, promote, and celebrate the sport at all levels in the country. The inductees, encompassing players, coaches, referees, and significant contributors, are chosen for their exceptional contributions to basketball in China. This year’s selection focused on legends active from 1949 to 1974, emphasizing the need to commemorate their contributions and pass down their legacy to future generations.

The 2023 class selection also serves an educational purpose for the current men’s basketball team, which has faced challenges in international competitions. By honoring these historical figures, the association aims to inspire the current generation of players with the rich legacy and enduring spirit of Chinese basketball.
