Watch Buddy Aims for Consecutive Wins at Happy Valley’s High West Handicap

SportsWatch Buddy Aims for Consecutive Wins at Happy Valley’s High West Handicap

Ricky Yiu Poon-fai is setting his sights high for his promising galloper, Watch Buddy, as they prepare for the Class Three High West Handicap (1,200m) at Happy Valley on Friday night. Following a triumphant run in the Class Four St Andrew’s Challenge Quaich (1,200m) on November 29, Watch Buddy is poised to continue his winning streak in what will be his fourth appearance at Happy Valley.

The four-year-old horse is making his debut in Class Three, stepping up from Class Four, and faces 10 competitors in this new challenge. Despite the increased competition level, Yiu remains optimistic about Watch Buddy’s chances, buoyed by the horse’s light 120-pound weight and his consistent improvement.

Watch Buddy’s journey started with a series of winless outings at Sha Tin last season, but he found his stride upon moving to Happy Valley on July 6. There, he clinched his first win in the Class Four Victoria Park Handicap (1,200m), showcasing his potential. Under the skilled guidance of regular rider Alexis Badel, Watch Buddy led from start to finish, narrowly edging out several fast competitors.

Yiu praised Watch Buddy’s progress, describing him as an “improving young horse” with a strong work ethic and potential for further growth. The horse’s tenacity was on full display in his last victory, overcoming a lackluster return in early October to win impressively eight weeks later.

Badel, sharing Yiu’s confidence, anticipates a competitive race in Class Three. He sees the upcoming event as an ideal opportunity for Watch Buddy to prove his worth in the higher class. Despite a modest success rate in recent seasons, the jockey believes in Watch Buddy’s adaptability and intelligence on the track, capable of adjusting to various racing tactics.

As for Badel, he heads into Happy Valley with a packed schedule of eight rides, one of which includes the promising Hercules in the Class Five Nam Long Shan Handicap (1,200m). Badel has previously won on Hercules and holds high regard for the horse’s resilience and spirit.

The upcoming race at Happy Valley presents a critical test for Watch Buddy and the Yiu-Badel partnership. With their combined expertise and the horse’s growing prowess, the team looks forward to making a significant impact in the High West Handicap, potentially adding another victory to their impressive record.
