Belgian Beer Celebrated: New Visitor Centre Opens in Brussels

CultureBelgian Beer Celebrated: New Visitor Centre Opens in Brussels

Belgium, a country renowned for its beer-making prowess, is all set to immerse visitors into its brewing history spanning several centuries. With over 430 breweries, each carrying its own story and unique brews, the nation is taking a bold step to showcase what truly makes Belgian beer stand out on the global stage. A grand visitor center, named “Belgian Beer World“, is set to throw open its doors this Saturday in the heart of Brussels, celebrating the deep-rooted beer culture that is intrinsic to the Belgian identity.

Housed in the architecturally splendid neoclassical building of the erstwhile Brussels Stock Exchange, the establishment of the visitor center is the culmination of a lavish renovation effort, with costs amounting to a whopping 90 million euros (approximately $96.25 million). This investment reflects Belgium’s commitment to promoting its beer heritage and drawing aficionados from around the world.

The center promises an enlightening journey, introducing visitors to the concept of “Belgitude”, a term capturing the essence of Belgian identity. What sets Belgian beer apart from its international counterparts? The answer lies in its unique brewing methods – four different fermentation techniques – and the tradition where each beer variety is accompanied by its distinctively branded glass. “In our country, the beer experience transcends just the taste of the liquid; it’s an embodiment of our history, culture, and tradition,” remarked Krishan Maudgal, the esteemed director of the Belgian Brewers association.

Boasting a diverse portfolio of around 1,600 beers, Belgium’s beer culture was rightfully recognized by UNESCO in 2016, marking its inclusion in the esteemed global list of traditions deemed worthy of preservation.

As visitors meander through the new center, they’ll embark on a chronological journey, starting from the Middle Ages. During those times, beer emerged as a safe drinking alternative, circumventing the risks associated with contaminated water. The introduction of hops as a preservative marked a pivotal moment in the evolution of beer-making. Fast forward to contemporary times, the center encapsulates modern brewing techniques and innovations, blending the old with the new. And, in true Belgian fashion, the tour culminates on a high note – a refreshing beer, personally recommended by a virtual barman, awaits visitors at the rooftop terrace bar.

While Brussels is no stranger to celebrating its beer heritage, with an existing beer museum that offers glimpses into traditional brewing methods, “Belgian Beer World” is in a league of its own. “We Belgians often downplay our achievements, approaching our successes with an unwarranted modesty,” observed Brussels city Mayor Philippe Close. He pointed out that cities like Dublin and Amsterdam have been proactive in marketing their beer cultures, while Belgium has remained relatively low-key.

However, with the inauguration of “Belgian Beer World”, Belgium is poised to rectify that. Mayor Close anticipates a footfall of around 300,000 enthusiastic visitors in the inaugural year. Those keen on diving deep into Belgium’s beer history can access the center with adult tickets priced at 17 euros, offering a unique blend of education, culture, and indulgence.
