The World: Luxurious Private Residential Yacht Redefines Travel

TravelThe World: Luxurious Private Residential Yacht Redefines Travel

Imagine embarking on a journey to Antarctica, passing penguin and seal colonies, and marveling at an active volcano from the comfort of your home. This is not a simulation, but a reality aboard The World, the largest private residential yacht on the seas, featuring 165 residences. The World combines the luxuries of a high-end hotel and a country club, offering worldwide excursions and top-notch amenities.

Launched in 2002 by a Norwegian shipping family, The World offers a unique living experience. Initially a hybrid concept with some units available for booking through travel agencies, it transitioned to a full-ownership model in 2003. Today, over 300 crew members from 42 countries manage the yacht, catering to residents who typically spend three to four months on board each year.

Residents, mostly high-net-worth individuals from North America, Australia, and Europe, enjoy a variety of amenities, including four restaurants, a fitness center, a spa, two swimming pools, a theater, a golf simulator, and the only regulation-size tennis court at sea. The yacht also features a concierge service and frequently invites local tour guides and travel coordinators to enhance the travel experience.

What sets The World apart from traditional cruise ships is the residents’ ability to vote on the yearly itinerary three years in advance. This allows for extended stays in major ports and notable destinations, ensuring a bespoke and intimate travel experience. Exclusive events, such as a private performance in an ancient Roman theater in Turkey, are organized for the residents.

Onboard entertainment includes lectures by notable figures, such as former Polish president Lech Walesa, and performances by artists like Swedish pop group ABBA. Residents can stargaze from reserved outdoor beds, swim across the equator, or participate in polar plunges, depending on the itinerary. The dining experience is equally exceptional, with a variety of cuisines and a wine collection that has won “Best Ship Wine List” for nine consecutive years.

Residences range from studio apartments to three-bedroom units, priced between $2 million and $15 million. An undisclosed ownership fee, based on the size of the apartment, covers food, drinks, and operating costs. Despite the high cost, many residents find it more convenient and cost-effective than owning a private yacht.

Currently, all residences are owned, but 8-10% may be available for sale at any time. Prospective buyers can tour the yacht and book a trial voyage. However, potential residents are vetted by existing owners to maintain the yacht’s exclusive and respectful community.

The World offers an unparalleled living and travel experience, blending luxury, adventure, and exceptional service in a way that remains unmatched by any other vessel.
