United Airlines has reopened its flagship Polaris lounge at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, offering an enhanced experience for premium international travelers. Located in Terminal 1, the newly renovated lounge is now 25,000 square feet in size—50% larger than before—and can accommodate 350 passengers. The expansion reflects United’s broader strategy to cater to high-paying customers as competition among airlines intensifies in the premium travel segment.
Designed with upscale furnishings from Crate & Barrel, the lounge features six additional bathrooms, a second bar designed in a speakeasy style, and 50 seats dedicated to sit-down dining. These additions aim to create a more refined and comfortable environment for long-haul passengers flying in United’s Polaris business class. Since the introduction of the Polaris brand in 2016, United has used these lounges to distinguish its premium offering from its more accessible United Clubs, a model later adopted by competitors like American Airlines and Delta Air Lines.
As airlines continue to court elite travelers and those with high-tier credit cards or loyalty status, lounges have become a key battleground. Premium travel remains a strong source of revenue even as economy bookings show signs of softness. The enhancements at United’s Polaris lounges are part of a larger effort to provide a superior experience to frequent business travelers and international passengers seeking more exclusivity and comfort.
United is also expanding its Polaris presence beyond Chicago. The airline plans to unveil an upgraded Polaris lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport in June. Additionally, early design work has begun for a potential Polaris lounge at Denver International Airport, further solidifying the brand’s commitment to luxury travel services at its major hubs.
Aaron McMillan, managing director of hospitality programs at United, noted that last summer saw periods when the Chicago lounge approached capacity. While crowding was a challenge, plans to enlarge the space have been in motion for several years. The renovations are not only aimed at easing congestion but also at raising the bar for amenities and service.
To complement these high-end spaces, United has also introduced grab-and-go lounges in cities like Denver and Houston. These are tailored for time-sensitive travelers who seek convenience without sacrificing quality. Together, these developments underscore United’s push to elevate its hospitality offerings and secure a leading position in the premium market.
