Airbnb Unveils Redesigned App with Expanded Services for Travelers

BusinessAirbnb Unveils Redesigned App with Expanded Services for Travelers

Airbnb has introduced a redesigned app, signaling the company’s ambitious move to broaden its offerings beyond home rentals. This update is part of Airbnb’s strategy to diversify its services, with the company committing to an investment of $200 million to $250 million into this new business segment. Airbnb’s business chief, Dave Stephenson, expressed confidence that the company’s strong foundation would enable it to expand effectively into these new areas.

Previously, Airbnb had explored diversifying its business beyond home rentals but scaled back those efforts in 2020, focusing on its core home-sharing model as the pandemic devastated the global travel industry. However, with the new app update, Airbnb aims to increase its revenue by offering a variety of services during home rentals. CEO Brian Chesky noted that the updated app is built on a new technology stack, enabling faster innovation and the addition of new features.

One of the major changes is the introduction of a new services tab in the app, which allows users to book services like spa treatments, personal training, and catered meals during their stays. This new feature will be available in 260 cities worldwide, aligning Airbnb’s offerings more closely with the amenities typically found at hotels and resorts. The company is working to ensure that service providers meet quality standards by expanding its vetting team to assess certifications and licensing, which vary by location. On average, service vendors have 10 years of experience, ensuring a high level of expertise.

The app update also highlights Airbnb’s “experiences” business, which was first launched in 2016. A new homepage tab categorizes experiences into 19 different types, including live performances, landmark tours, and fitness activities, which are available in 650 cities. One notable addition is Airbnb Originals, which includes unique tours designed by Airbnb, such as a tour of Notre Dame with a restoration architect in Paris. Additionally, Airbnb is collaborating to offer experiences and services at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan.

To enhance social interaction, Airbnb has revamped its social features, allowing users to see other guests attending the same experiences. The update also introduces a new messaging section, enabling users to share photos and videos with fellow travelers and providing enhanced privacy features for post-trip interactions. Through these updates, Airbnb aims to offer a more comprehensive and immersive travel experience for its users.
