In a significant move, China has expressed its willingness to provide unconditional assistance to Sri Lanka and boost imports from the island nation, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced during a meeting with his Sri Lankan counterpart on Friday in Beijing, according to state media reports.
This commitment from China comes at a critical juncture, just a week after Sri Lanka revealed it had reached an agreement with the Export-Import Bank of China to address a portion of its crippling debt, amounting to $4.2 billion. While this is a substantial step towards resolving Sri Lanka’s debt crisis, it represents only a fraction of the approximately $7 billion owed to various Chinese lenders, both bilateral and commercial.
President Xi Jinping underscored the importance of collaborative efforts between the two nations in promoting key projects like the Colombo port city and Hambantota, both of which are integral components of China’s ambitious ‘Belt and Road‘ initiative, aimed at enhancing connectivity and infrastructure development.
“The two sides should make every effort to promote Colombo port city and Hambantota,” President Xi told his Sri Lankan counterpart, President Ranil Wickremesinghe, during their meeting. These projects have received significant backing from China as part of its broader strategy to boost trade and infrastructure development.
President Wickremesinghe had traveled to the Chinese capital to attend the Belt and Road Forum, which concluded on Wednesday, and to engage in discussions regarding debt restructuring.
During the meeting, President Xi Jinping emphasized, “China is willing to continue to provide assistance to Sri Lanka without attaching political conditions, to help it cope with the difficulties it faces.” This statement reflects China’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka in overcoming its economic challenges without imposing any political constraints.
Sri Lanka’s economic struggles came to the forefront last May when the country defaulted on its foreign debt. At that time, the nation’s dollar reserves had dwindled to a critical point where it could no longer cover essential imports, including fuel and medicine. China’s offer of unconditional assistance is a lifeline for Sri Lanka as it seeks to stabilize its financial situation and ensure its citizens’ well-being.
Furthermore, President Xi Jinping declared that China is willing to expand its imports of Sri Lankan products and actively encourage Chinese enterprises to invest in the country. This commitment to increase imports and encourage investment signifies China’s desire to strengthen economic ties and provide Sri Lanka with opportunities for growth and development.
The Chinese president’s statements reflect a broader effort by China to deepen its economic collaboration with Sri Lanka, while simultaneously extending a hand of support to a nation grappling with severe financial constraints. This move not only bodes well for Sri Lanka but also reinforces China’s commitment to its ‘Belt and Road’ initiative, which continues to shape global infrastructure and economic development.
