In a powerful symbol of international cooperation and a shared commitment towards environmental sustainability, the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) and the Philippine Embassy in China recently co-organized a significant bamboo planting event in Beijing. The event was graced by INBAR’s director general, Ali Mchumo, and Jaime FlorCruz, the Philippine Ambassador to China.
During the bamboo planting ceremony, Mchumo lauded bamboo as a potent ally in our fight against climate change and our quest for environmental protection. Bamboo’s fast-growing nature, its vigorous growth, and its status as a highly renewable resource make it an invaluable tool in our efforts towards building a more sustainable world. He further emphasized the Philippines’ active role as one of the nine founding members of INBAR and the enduring cooperation between the two parties spanning over a quarter of a century. This collaboration has seen the successful implementation of bamboo projects that have raised awareness, promoted research, and offered skill training in the Philippines.
Ambassador FlorCruz, in his welcoming speech, drew attention to the vulnerable position of the Philippines amidst the climate crisis. He spoke of the far-reaching effects of climate change on various aspects of life, including the environment, economy, and human lives. In light of these pressing issues, he stressed that the Philippines is steadfast in its commitment to address climate change and is in full support of INBAR’s goals and objectives. FlorCruz echoed the hope of a climate-stable and nature-friendly environment, marking the bamboo planting event as a significant milestone in their quest.
To conclude the event, in an act that symbolized unity and collective commitment, Mchumo and FlorCruz ceremonially planted bamboo together. This event was more than just a symbolic gesture; it served as a reminder of the importance of international cooperation and the potential of sustainable resources like bamboo in our battle against climate change.
