With a mission to preserve and innovate the heritage of knitting, Laws Knitters Studio is leading the way in reimagining knitted products. Founded in 2022 by LAWSGROUP, a renowned apparel manufacturer based in Hong Kong, the studio beautifully melds traditional craftsmanship with contemporary techniques.
The creations that come out of Laws Knitters Studio pay homage to Hong Kong’s unique culture. At the same time, they reflect the studio’s commitment to sustainability and the revival of local manufacturing, two fundamental principles that the studio upholds.
The location of Laws Knitters Studio in Sham Shui Po is no coincidence. This neighborhood, which was once the epicenter of Hong Kong’s textile industry and is now facing a wave of gentrification, is teeming with artists dedicated to safeguarding and reinterpreting Hong Kong’s cultural heritage.
In March, Laws Knitters Studio unveiled a series of 14 tapestries named “Monster Buildings”. These works capture the spirit of Hong Kong’s unique and densely populated architectural landscape, incorporating design elements from the city’s iconic structures. From the circular glass windows of the Jardine House in Central to the infamous “Monster Building” in Quarry Bay, these knitted masterpieces help keep alive a distinctive part of Hong Kong’s culture.
The studio is also keen on forging partnerships with other artists and designers to promote innovative ways of approaching traditional art. A collaboration with the French fashion brand Agnès b resulted in an exhibition that reflects the vibrant fusion of Eastern and Western cultures. In the exhibition, photos taken by Agnès b of French gardens were turned into knitwork sculptures, transforming the space into a whimsical garden that merges elements of France and Hong Kong.
In line with its commitment to sustainability, Laws Knitters Studio employs environmentally friendly practices in its work. For instance, the yarn used in the knitwork sculptures was made from recycled fishing nets. The studio also partnered with British car brand Mini for a pop-up shop selling items knitted with recycled yarn, with proceeds going towards Redress, an environmental charity dedicated to reducing textile waste and promoting sustainable fashion.
Moreover, Laws Knitters Studio is gearing up for the upcoming Fashion Summit in October, where it will create knitted souvenirs inspired by Hong Kong’s iconic neon signs, offering attendees a tangible piece of the city’s heritage. By focusing on preserving traditional knitting techniques, reinterpreting them in contemporary ways, and championing sustainability, Laws Knitters Studio is crafting a unique space in the intersection of arts, culture, and environmental consciousness.
