Current Plans Art Space: Celebrating the End of an Era with Unique Performances

CultureArtCurrent Plans Art Space: Celebrating the End of an Era with Unique Performances

As one of Hong Kong’s most beloved non-profit art venues, Current Plans is set to conclude its journey in Sham Shui Po with a series of memorable events. This weekend, the art space, led by founder Eunice Tsang, will host ‘Currently Still Planning to Perform,’ an overnight public performance involving two collaborative groups, Per.Platform and Stilllive. This event marks a significant moment for Current Plans, which has become a hub for unconventional and thought-provoking art exhibitions and performances.

Friday evening will see over 15 artists from Per.Platform and artist Yuki Kobayashi from Stilllive come together to create a performance reflecting on the evolution of Sham Shui Po and the flourishing local art community. The public is invited to participate from 7 pm, offering a chance to immerse themselves in the creative process and stay as long as they wish.

Eunice Tsang reflects on her time running Current Plans, originally known as Present Projects from 2020 to 2021. She recalls the inception of the space as an art student’s dream in London, and how it evolved into a haven for artists who felt out of place in Hong Kong’s contemporary art scene. Despite the initial challenges and the recent rise in rents and redevelopment in Sham Shui Po, Tsang’s journey with Current Plans has been filled with encouragement and support from the community.

The space’s final day, Sunday, will feature a unique interactive experience where Tsang will set up a podcast station. Visitors are invited to share their stories, thoughts on Current Plans, or any topic of their choice. These conversations will be recorded for the website and may also feature in a book about the space.

Current Plans’ closure is more of a “hibernation,” as Tsang plans to reopen in a new industrial space lent by a friend next year. The goal is to find a permanent home in a grassroots area and establish a sustainable model through partnerships, grants, and private patronage.

The upcoming overnight performance promises to explore themes like liminality, eviction, and the body’s relationship with the capitalist world. It’s an opportunity for attendees to experience art beyond traditional gallery hours, focusing on intimacy and bodily awareness during the night.

Tsang expresses gratitude for her Sham Shui Po neighbors and the lessons learned throughout this journey. As Current Plans prepares for its next chapter, she hopes for greater support and encouragement for young creatives in a fast-paced, capitalist world. This weekend’s events are not just a farewell but a celebration of the art community’s resilience and the promise of continued creative exploration.
