Chilean author Isabel Allende, one of the most renowned Spanish-language writers, is being honored with her own Barbie doll as part of Mattel’s “Inspiring Women” series. The doll, created from recycled plastic, features Allende in a red dress with large earrings and includes her dog Perla, along with a miniature version of her first novel, The House of the Spirits. This series celebrates women who have made significant contributions to history and culture, with past honorees including poet Maya Angelou and journalist Ida B. Wells.
Allende expressed her excitement for the initiative, stating, “I celebrate the Barbie brand’s initiative to inspire the next generation with the stories of unsung heroes. I want kids to dream big.” Known for her blend of historical events with magical realism, Allende’s works have captivated readers worldwide. The House of the Spirits, published in 1982, was an instant bestseller and propelled her into international literary fame. Since then, her novels, memoirs, and short stories have been translated into over 40 languages, making her one of the most widely read authors in the world.
Allende’s personal journey is as remarkable as her literary career. She left Chile for Venezuela in 1973 after her cousin, President Salvador Allende, was overthrown in a coup led by General Augusto Pinochet. Now a long-time resident of the United States, Allende has also become a noted human rights activist and teacher of literature. Her works often highlight themes of social justice, female empowerment, and resilience.
Reflecting on the power of storytelling, Allende said, “Stories have incredible power. They challenge our minds and touch our hearts, they connect us to other people, and teach us that we are not alone in life’s journey.” The author will also be featured in Barbie’s first-ever podcast series, which launches on Friday. The podcast will spotlight other influential figures, including Katya Echazarreta, the first Mexican-born woman to travel to space, figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi, and dancer Debbie Allen.
Barbie’s recent efforts to diversify its collection with varying skin tones and body types, combined with honoring trailblazing women like Isabel Allende, have resonated with a broader audience. This initiative, along with the success of the 2023 Barbie movie, highlights the brand’s shift toward deeper cultural relevance and emotional impact while continuing to inspire the next generation of dreamers and achievers.
