CNTO’s “Ode to Huangzhong Dalü”: Reviving Chinese Musical Heritage

CultureCNTO's "Ode to Huangzhong Dalü": Reviving Chinese Musical Heritage

The China National Traditional Orchestra (CNTO) took center stage at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing this past Wednesday and Thursday. They mesmerized audiences with the premiere of their unique ethnic music concert, titled “Ode to Huangzhong Dalü.” The concert was a profound homage to the deep-rooted heritage of the Chinese musical system, specifically focusing on the traditional pitch system known as the 12 Lülü.

The term Huangzhong represents the initial note of this distinctive pitch sequence, while Dalü refers to one of the earliest musical scales documented in written history. These ancient scales act as a temporal vault, preserving elusive moments of sound that have echoed through centuries.

The “Ode to Huangzhong Dalü” concert served a dual purpose. On one hand, it was created to conserve and celebrate traditional music. On the other hand, it aimed to break new ground by pioneering contemporary styles, thus keeping the tradition alive and relevant.

To achieve this, the concert cleverly corresponded the 12 Lülü with a dozen classical and newly composed pieces. A myriad of presentations, including solos, ensembles, concertos, vocals, recitations, and dances, were masterfully curated. This diverse blend enabled audiences to explore and understand the ancient musical system in an immersive, engaging manner, thereby breathing new life into this rich cultural tradition.

The creation and execution of the concert involved an assembly of five top-tier national artists. This team comprised of Zhao Cong, the head of the CNTO and artistic director of the concert, and Tian Qinxin, the director of the National Theatre of China, who assumed the role of general director for the show.

The concert was further elevated by contributions from dance director Li Shibao of the China National Opera and Dance Drama Theatre, dancers Gao Min and Wu Ao, and the renowned soprano Ruan Yuqun and tenor Li Shuang from the China National Opera House. Together, they delivered an unforgettable performance, concluding with the titular piece “Ode to Huangzhong Dalü.”

Artistic director Zhao Cong lauded the concert’s success, expressing that “The China National Traditional Orchestra has perfectly showcased the continuity, inclusiveness, and innovation of Chinese civilization.”

The concert opened with the music of the “eight sounds,” using the interconnected nature of the 12 Lülü to chronologically trace the history of China. This was accomplished through an innovative stage design and classical works infused with modern musical concepts, creating a unique space for music appreciation that retained Asian characteristics.

By presenting a variety of works, the concert depicted the openness, inclusiveness, and integration of Chinese civilization. It concluded with a performance of the Huangzhong Dalü of the new era, crafting a harmonious chapter in support of a global community that shares a common future. This grand spectacle was more than a mere concert – it was a tribute to tradition, a celebration of innovation, and a testament to the enduring vibrancy of Chinese culture.
