CultureMusic & TheaterBTS Member Jin Completes Military Service and Reunites with Bandmates

Jin, the eldest member of the globally acclaimed K-pop group BTS, has been discharged from South Korea’s army after completing an 18-month mandatory national service, becoming the first member of the group to do so. His military service had paused his music career, but now, at 31, he is ready to return to the spotlight. Jin, dressed in uniform and a black beret, appeared emotional as he hugged his colleagues at the military base in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi province, as shown in television footage.

During a livestream on the Weverse fandom platform, which garnered over 3 million views, Jin shared his feelings about the ceremony. “I cried during the ceremony,” he admitted. “But it was so fun for the last year and six months. It’s such a relief I met so many amazing people,” he added, sending his regards to his colleagues at the military base.

Several other members of BTS, who are also serving in the military, reportedly applied for leave to celebrate Jin’s discharge. Among them was rapper RM, who greeted Jin with a saxophone performance of their hit single “Dynamite.” The reunion highlighted the strong bond among the band members, even during their time apart.

Jin had enlisted in the military in December 2022, setting a precedent for his bandmates. The final four members of BTS began their service in December 2023, with the group planning to reunite in 2025 once they all complete their duties. This period of service is a significant part of South Korea’s mandatory military conscription, which requires able-bodied men to serve for about 18 to 21 months.

The anticipation for BTS’s full reunion is high, with fans eagerly awaiting the return of the complete group to the music scene. Their hiatus due to military service has only heightened the anticipation for new music and performances. Jin’s discharge marks a significant step towards this highly awaited reunion, and his emotional return underscores the deep connections between the band members and their shared journey.

The support from his fellow BTS members and the enthusiasm from fans worldwide reflect the group’s immense popularity and the impact they have had on the global music industry. As they gradually complete their military service, the excitement for their comeback continues to build, promising a powerful return in 2025.
