Transforming a High-Rise Apartment: A Blend of Elegance and Functionality

LifestyleTransforming a High-Rise Apartment: A Blend of Elegance and Functionality

Adrian Hung, a renowned designer, took on the challenge of personalizing a sophisticated high-rise apartment. His clients, a creative director named Asai Au and a hair specialist named Mo Yeung, shared a vision of elegance and simplicity. Located in Tseung Kwan O, the 768 sq ft apartment offered a breathtaking 270-degree sea view towards Sai Kung, which made it a perfect canvas for Adrian’s artistry.

Understanding his client’s preferences and their inclination towards a monochromatic theme, Adrian carefully crafted a black-and-white design with nuanced grey shades. This choice effortlessly blended with the apartment’s neutral fit-out, provided by the developer. This classic color palette also amplified the beauty of the designer furniture and lighting the couple adored. Every piece became a statement, resonating with the couple’s passion for art and design.

Both Asai and Mo had a taste for genuine and iconic design pieces. In their world of fashion and beauty, having furniture with an authentic backstory mattered. Everything in the apartment had to be 100% original. Adrian noted, “We sought out collections from the same design epoch, particularly pieces in black.”

While the couple was enchanted by the apartment’s spatial layout, they felt the need to revamp the kitchen. As a modern Hong Kong pair not often indulging in traditional Chinese cooking, they dreamt of an open kitchen concept. Adrian achieved this by partially dismantling a wall and installing an island counter that faced the dining area. To ensure the new design felt continuous, Adrian topped the island with black marble, contrasting the original white Corian countertops.

This new island wasn’t just about aesthetics. Functionality was enhanced by adding a modern Quooker tap and concealed electrical sockets, facilitating easier hosting during dinners.

Adjoining the dining area was a curated assortment of iconic chairs, each representing significant design philosophies. Adding character to this eclectic setting was a shelving unit, reminiscent of the 1960s modular system by Dieter Rams. The living space too echoed a blend of vintage and contemporary, with a Togo sofa set against a lamp inspired by Brutalist architecture.

However, the apartment’s two bathrooms needed complete revamping. They were too simplistic for the duo’s taste. Adrian reimagined these spaces, infusing luxury with high-end tiles, fixtures, and carefully chosen accessories, all while being economical by retaining the original layout and utilities.

Previously a three-bedroom apartment, Adrian converted two of these into a multifunctional dressing room that also functioned as a reading nook. Custom-designed furniture, including expansive wardrobes and a centerpiece island, were installed. The room also featured a distinct modular storage unit showcasing the couple’s exotic cactus collection.

To address the issue of storage for bulkier items, Adrian creatively transformed the helper’s room. By raising the bed onto a platform, he ingeniously carved out additional storage space beneath.

In reflection, Adrian’s design journey with this apartment is a testament to how a thoughtfully chosen designer collection can breathe life and personality into a home.
