Teacher Suspended in Jiangsu for Corporal Punishment in Classroom

LifestyleTeacher Suspended in Jiangsu for Corporal Punishment in Classroom

In a disturbing incident at a primary school in Jiangsu province, eastern China, a teacher’s unconventional punishment method has led to her suspension and sparked a major controversy. The teacher, identified only by her surname Zhu, came under fire for her handling of a classroom situation involving students eating snacks during her lesson. When none of the girls involved admitted to the act, Zhu escalated the situation by ordering them to stand and slap themselves on the face ten times.

As the punishment unfolded, Zhu observed that some of the girls were hesitant or did not slap themselves with enough force. In a highly questionable decision, she then turned to the boys in the class, asking if any were willing to administer the slaps. Several boys agreed, and Zhu selected a few to carry out the physical punishment on their female classmates.

The incident quickly escalated beyond the school’s walls as outraged parents voiced their concerns in the class WeChat group. One parent reported their daughter’s face was still red from the slaps when she returned home. Another questioned the fairness of the punishment, noting that their daughter was hit despite not being involved in the initial incident. A mother of one of the boys involved defended her son, stating he was too young to defy the teacher’s instructions.

The teacher’s actions were met with an immediate backlash, leading to her removal from teaching duties and the possibility of further disciplinary action. The headmaster of the school, while addressing the issue, mentioned that Zhu had been dealing with personal family matters, which may have contributed to her loss of temper. The local education authority has also initiated an investigation into the matter.

Incidents of corporal punishment in Chinese schools often become a topic of heated discussion on social media. Earlier this year, a similar case in Hunan province caused public outrage when a teacher used a metal ruler to hit a nine-year-old girl, resulting in severe injuries. This latest incident in Jiangsu has once again brought the issue of physical punishment and discipline in schools to the forefront of public discourse, highlighting the need for clear guidelines and professional conduct in educational settings.
