Dr. Bryan Lo, a Singapore-born and Vancouver-raised chiropractor at Atlas Chiropractic Studio in Hong Kong’s Central neighborhood, shared his story with Andrew Sun. Dr. Lo’s journey to Hong Kong was a way for him to explore his roots and connect with the place where his mother was born and raised.
Growing up, Dr. Lo was often sick until the age of 10. His grandmother, who grew up in Hong Kong and raised four children in the Kowloon Walled City, made herbal soups for him daily, which he believes significantly contributed to his current health. These soups were a staple in his diet, often mixed with rice, a practice he still fondly remembers.
Now, Dr. Lo’s diet is more varied. He frequently visits Mirror Burger on Queen’s Road West for their 3,2,1 burger with blue cheese. Despite loving it, he limits himself to visiting once a week. He also enjoys cocktails at Twenty-Fifth Hour in Central, appreciating the friendly service and the staff’s willingness to explain each drink.
Another favorite spot is Hive, a quaint café inside a gym in Yuen Long, offering healthy snacks that complement the exercise programs available. For ramen, Dr. Lo recommends Ramen House Konjiki Hototogisu at IFC in Central, where he made one of his first friends in Hong Kong.
For local cuisine, Dr. Lo enjoys the classic Hong Kong experience at Australia Dairy Company in Jordan, known for its quick service, reasonable prices, and excellent pudding. He loves the bustling atmosphere of Hong Kong, especially during off-peak times when lines are not too long.
For special occasions, Dr. Lo heads to Yardbird in Sheung Wan for their delicious yakitori. One of his most memorable dining experiences was in El Salvador in 2018. After a week of helping locals on a chiropractic mission, he and his team dined at La Pampa El Volcan Restaurant, located on the side of a volcano. He recalls having a steak covered with prawns and sauce wrapped in egg, a dish he ordered on a whim but found amazing, especially when enjoyed with a glass of red wine under the moonlit sky.
Dr. Lo’s journey reflects a deep appreciation for his roots and a love for exploring new culinary experiences, making his story a rich tapestry of heritage and gastronomic delight.
