My Boo Review: A Haunted Romance with Humor and Heart

CultureFilm & TvMy Boo Review: A Haunted Romance with Humor and Heart

In My Boo, a romantic horror comedy directed by Khomkrit Treewimol, love transcends even death. The film follows Joe (played by Sutthirak “Gee” Subvijitra), a struggling online gamer who inherits a dilapidated, haunted house after his wealthy grandfather’s passing. Little does he know, the property is haunted by Anong (Maylada Susri, aka Bow), a beautiful ghost, and two other spectral residents. The trio has been trapped within the house for nearly a century, reenacting the tragic events of their deaths every night at midnight.

As Joe faces mounting debts and a loan shark’s threats, he hatches a plan to turn the haunted house into a profitable tourist attraction, hoping to make enough money to pay off his debts. He convinces Anong and her ghostly companions to stage terrifying scenarios for the thrill-seeking visitors. The haunted house becomes a viral sensation, but things take an unexpected turn when Joe begins to fall in love with Anong. As their relationship deepens, Anong discovers she can only leave the house by possessing a human host, which leads to some hilarious consequences involving a local troublemaker.

My Boo thrives as a romance, with the chemistry between Joe and Anong providing the emotional core of the story. The romance feels genuine, and the leads, both sympathetic and likeable, draw viewers into their unlikely love story. The film’s humor, however, is more hit or miss. The comedic elements, particularly the exaggerated antics of the gay sidekicks, feel forced and detract from the more heartfelt moments. Still, the ghostly performances, including staged decapitations and disembowelments by Anong’s spectral companions, bring some lightness to the darker themes.

While the film struggles with its humor, it shines in its portrayal of the central love story, balancing tenderness with a touch of the supernatural. In its final moments, My Boo attempts to touch on deeper themes of modernity and Thailand’s violent history, but these observations come too late in the narrative, overshadowed by the more immediate concerns of Joe and Anong’s love.

Ultimately, My Boo is a charming, if occasionally uneven, tale of love that defies death, with the emotional resonance of its central romance making it an enjoyable watch for fans of quirky love stories with a supernatural twist. The film is now streaming on Netflix.
