Light Shop Review: A Supernatural Drama with Intrigue and Emotion

CultureFilm & TvLight Shop Review: A Supernatural Drama with Intrigue and Emotion

The supernatural drama Light Shop weaves an intriguing narrative around a simple yet compelling concept. Its core premise, a mysterious light shop, sets the stage for a show that alternates between ethereal mystery and heartfelt exposition.

The story unfolds in two halves. The first four episodes immerse viewers in brooding horror and enigmatic intrigue. In the latter half, streaming now on Disney+, creator Kang Full unravels the shop’s secrets. The light shop, run by Jung Won-young (Ju Ji-hoon), serves as the meeting point for characters connected by a tragic bus crash. Many of them lie comatose in a hospital, while the shop resides in an otherworldly realm.

Nurse Kwon Young-ji (Park Bo-young) narrates the scientific exploration of near-death experiences, linking the bright light at the end of a tunnel to the shop’s glowing bulbs. These bulbs allow characters to choose between waking from their comas or staying in this liminal space. The light shop, it turns out, is not purgatory but the afterlife.

Kang skillfully misdirects early assumptions, suggesting the shop’s patrons are ghosts. In truth, the “normal” customers are deceased, while those displaying odd characteristics are clinging to life.

The show intricately explores its characters’ stories, like the tragic romance of Hyun-min (Uhm Tae-goo) and Ji-young (Kim Seol-hyun). Their shared journey in the afterlife, marked by grief and recognition, underscores the emotional weight of the series. Other characters, such as Yoon Seon-hae (Kim Min-ha) and her partner Hye-won (Kim Sun-hwa), grapple with societal pressures and personal turmoil.

While the emotional depth enriches the narrative, the dense backstories and heightened sentimentality can feel overwhelming. Kang’s poignant scenarios sometimes tip into melodrama, and the midseason tension dissipates too quickly in favor of revelations and resolutions.

The season closes with an extended epilogue and a tease for a possible continuation. Despite some pacing issues, Light Shop delivers powerful moments of emotional resonance and thought-provoking ideas, cementing its place as a unique entry in supernatural storytelling.

Light Shop is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
