South Korean actor Hyun Bin considers Harbin a deeply meaningful project. Coincidentally, the day after the traditional ceremony to bless the film in 2022, Hyun Bin welcomed his first child with his wife, actress Son Ye-jin. Reflecting on his evolving life, Hyun Bin shared, “Getting married and having a child has changed so much. My thoughts and responsibilities have shifted. My son and Son Ye-jin are my top priorities, and I’m second.”
Harbin, which premiered in South Korea on December 24 and is set to release in select Asian markets before arriving in North America on January 3, explores a pivotal moment in Korean history. The film, directed by Woo Min-ho, takes place in 1909 and chronicles the mission of Korean independence fighters led by Ahn Jung-geun (1879–1910). Their plan to assassinate Ito Hirobumi, Japan’s first prime minister, at China’s Harbin Station unfolds against the backdrop of Japan’s impending annexation of Korea.
Hyun Bin acknowledged concerns from his Japanese fans, particularly those who admire him from Crash Landing on You. Despite initial hesitations, he felt the project carried significant weight. “Films like this remind us of things we may have forgotten and evoke gratitude. The movie delves into the journey that led to Ahn’s historic mission,” he said.
Unlike many historical dramas that focus on climactic events, Harbin emphasizes the groundwork and efforts leading up to Ahn’s mission. Hyun Bin described his portrayal of Ahn as a man driven by unwavering resolve despite repeated failures. His character alternates between desolation and fierce determination, highlighted by scenes showing him as a lone figure sobbing in despair or braving the eerie sounds of a vast frozen lake.
The actor found the role challenging, especially while capturing Ahn’s psychological and emotional depth. “Standing on the ice, hearing those unsettling sounds, I could imagine the independence fighters’ loneliness and desolation,” he shared.
The pressure of portraying such an iconic historical figure lingered even after filming. “The weight of Ahn Jung-geun’s presence is enormous. When we wrapped up, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief,” Hyun Bin admitted.
Harbin not only sheds light on Ahn’s mission but also invites audiences to reflect on the sacrifices of independence fighters and their enduring legacy.
