Hollywood’s 2025 awards season begins on Sunday with the annual Golden Globes, celebrating achievements in film and television. This year’s ceremony, hosted for the first time by comedian Nikki Glaser, will air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+. The Globes are known for their relaxed atmosphere compared to the Oscars, featuring nominees enjoying cocktails and hosts delivering sharp humor.

This year, Glaser plans to set a celebratory tone, avoiding overly critical jokes. She aims to ensure nominees, including Timothee Chalamet, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, and Angelina Jolie, feel honored.

In the film categories, “The Brutalist” and “Emilia Perez” lead the nominations. “The Brutalist,” starring Adrien Brody as a Holocaust survivor pursuing the American dream, is a frontrunner for Best Film Drama. Other contenders include “Conclave,” about the selection of a new pope, and two Chalamet-starring films: the Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown” and the sci-fi epic “Dune – Part II.”

Musical and comedy films compete in a separate category. Nominees include the Broadway adaptation “Wicked,” the dark romantic comedy “Anora,” and the Spanish-language musical thriller “Emilia Perez,” which tells the story of a drug lord transitioning from a man to a woman. Other nominees are “The Substance,” a horror-infused tale of a fading celebrity, and “Anora,” a satire about a sex worker marrying a Russian oligarch’s son.

Winning a Golden Globe often boosts a project’s visibility ahead of the Oscars. Awards expert Scott Feinberg predicts “The Brutalist” or “Conclave” will take the drama prize, while the comedy/musical category remains unpredictable due to its diverse nominees.

The presenter lineup includes A-list stars like Dwayne Johnson, Elton John, Andrew Garfield, and Awkwafina.

In television, “The Bear” leads with the most nominations, followed by “Only Murders in the Building” and “Shogun.”

The Golden Globes are decided by 334 entertainment journalists from 85 countries. Recent reforms have expanded the voting body and addressed past criticisms, focusing on ethics and diversity.

The ceremony promises to highlight a wide array of talent, setting the stage for the Oscars in March.
