As the second weekend of Coachella approaches, the fashion scene at this year’s festival is signaling a noticeable shift. Once dominated by boho-chic ensembles and flower crowns, the current aesthetic leans more towards subdued, clean looks with occasional bursts of daring creativity. The change is exemplified by Vanessa Hudgens, once crowned the undisputed style icon of Coachella, whose whimsical, bohemian flair has given way to a more understated appearance that mirrors the general tone among attendees.
This evolving style sentiment may stem from a desire to blend into the crowd, especially among high-profile celebrities like Timothée Chalamet, Kylie Jenner, Justin Bieber, and Hailey Bieber, who were spotted mingling casually with the masses. Yet, despite the prevalence of muted tones and minimal silhouettes, a number of stars embraced bold fashion choices that commanded attention both on and off stage.
Lady Gaga, always known for her theatrical flair, took to the stage in a custom feathery outfit by avant-garde label Fecal Matter, complete with bird claw hands that elevated her performance into performance art. Meanwhile, Lisa from Blackpink delivered an unforgettable solo debut in a custom reptilian-inspired bodysuit by Asher Levine, a stark contrast to her previous screen persona in “The White Lotus.”
Her bandmate Jennie went full Western glam in a leather jacket and matching micro-shorts designed by Georges Hobeika, perfectly capturing Coachella’s fusion of music and fashion. Julia Fox turned heads with her bold take on cowboy style, wearing nothing under her leather chaps and cropped jacket except a confident attitude. The micro-bottoms trend continued across several performances, with Megan Thee Stallion, Ciara, Tyla, and Victoria Monét each taking the stage in ultra-short shorts that blurred the line between runway and risqué.
Surprisingly, one of the most talked-about appearances came from Bernie Sanders, who eschewed all expectations in his signature navy blazer and pale blue shirt. While seemingly out of place amid the festival’s desert backdrop, his presence added an element of unexpected cool as he delivered a speech ahead of Clairo’s performance.
This year’s Coachella has proven that whether minimalist or extravagant, festival fashion remains a space for personal expression — one where blending in and standing out both have their moment in the sun.
