SportsSolomon Islands Athletes Train in China: A Boost Ahead of the 2023 Pacific Games

China’s small mountain city, Panzhihua, recently hosted a group of unique visitors hailing from the Solomon Islands. This group consisted of 80 athletes who embarked on a 90-day intensive training program, aiming to hone their skills ahead of the upcoming 2023 Pacific Games. The training is being facilitated by professional coaches and advanced training bases, presenting a golden opportunity for these athletes to take their performance to the next level.

These athletes, selected from a pool of 650 participants, are the largest-ever team from the Solomon Islands to train abroad. They represent a range of sports including athletics, swimming, taekwondo, boxing, weightlifting, table tennis, and judo. Their journey is a testament to the increasing prominence of international training programs in advancing athletic performance.

Living and training in Panzhihua’s Hongge and Miyi national training bases, the athletes are experiencing a conducive climate for rigorous physical conditioning. Known for its year-round warm and wet climate, Panzhihua has become a hub for sports training in China.

According to Liu Hongchao, a coach from the Sichuan provincial judo team, the importance of this training initiative is not lost on anyone involved. To ensure tailored training regimes for the athletes, a comprehensive fitness assessment and specialized technical evaluation were conducted. This initial assessment helped the coaches understand the athletes’ current condition, enabling them to design training sessions that would be most beneficial for each individual.

The goal of this training program is not only to enhance the athletes’ performance but also to instill in them a scientific and correct training philosophy. Using systematic training methods, the program aims to elevate their specialized abilities, setting them on a path for rapid improvements over the three-month training period.

However, the adjustment to high-intensity training has not been without challenges. Tetekana Clinton, a 26-year-old boxer from the Solomon Islands, acknowledged the significant difference in training conditions between his home country and China. Despite these challenges, Clinton remains optimistic, setting his sights on securing a gold medal at the Pacific Games.

Training at the advanced facilities has also been a pleasure for eight-year veteran taekwondo athlete, Isaac Pat Myrie. He appreciated the detailed training and is looking forward to the improvements it will bring to his performance.

China Sports International Co Ltd, an organization under the General Administration of Sport of China, is overseeing the training project. Yan Zhiguo, the manager of the Economic Aid Department at the company, expressed confidence in the potential of the training program to significantly improve the athletes’ performance. Previous similar projects, such as the one with Samoan athletes in 2019, had yielded considerable improvements.

This training program also offers an opportunity for the athletes to understand China’s friendliness and witness the country’s development. To facilitate cultural exchange, the organizers arranged for the athletes to explore Panzhihua, including a visit to a local museum and a shopping mall, and plans are afoot for a visit to the panda base in Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan.

The 2023 Pacific Games will commence in November in Honiara, the capital city of the Solomon Islands. The Solomon Islands aims to secure 100 medals, including 40 golds, making this training program in China crucial for their success.

The mutual benefits of this program extend beyond athletic performance, fostering stronger ties between the two nations. As remarked by the Chinese Ambassador to the Solomon Islands, Li Ming, the training not only enhances sports performance but also enables the athletes to experience Chinese culture and its development, symbolizing the increasingly broad cooperation between China and the Solomon Islands.
