Argentina’s Unbeaten Streak Ended by Uruguay in World Cup Qualifier

SportsArgentina's Unbeaten Streak Ended by Uruguay in World Cup Qualifier

Argentina’s impressive 14-match unbeaten streak in international football came to an abrupt end on Thursday night, as they were handed a 2-0 defeat by a determined Uruguay team. The match, held at the iconic La Bombonera stadium, saw the reigning World Cup champions Argentina face a significant challenge in their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Uruguay’s victory was marked by goals from Maxi Araujo and Darwin Nunez, disrupting Argentina’s perfect record in the current qualifying round. Argentina had entered the match riding high on confidence, having won all four of their previous qualifiers. However, Uruguay’s assertive and strategic play posed unforeseen challenges for Lionel Messi and his teammates.

From the outset, Uruguay displayed an aggressive game plan, taking the game to Argentina and creating early chances. Nunez’s early attempt, which saw his shot deflected and almost catch Argentine defender Nicolas Otamendi off guard, set the tone for what was to come.

Argentina’s head coach Lionel Scaloni, recently named Best FIFA Men’s Coach of the Year, watched with concern as his side struggled to contain Uruguay’s wide players. Despite his efforts to redirect his team, Argentina’s midfield faltered, leading to Uruguay’s opening goal. A defensive error by Nahuel Molina allowed Matias Vina to deliver a precise cross to Araujo, who made no mistake in finding the net.

Lionel Messi, lacking match sharpness due to the off-season in MLS, still managed to create significant opportunities for Argentina. His free-kick and a close-range effort from Otamendi came close but were not enough to alter the scoreline.

In the second half, Uruguay maintained their pressure, and Argentina continued to rely on Messi’s brilliance. The legendary forward, who has won the Ballon d’Or eight times, struck the crossbar with another free-kick, keeping the hosts in the game. However, Uruguay sealed their victory with Nunez’s late goal, delivering a masterful finish.

The defeat, while a setback for Argentina, does not drastically alter their standing in the World Cup qualifiers. Argentina remains at the top of the table with 12 points from five matches, with Uruguay closely following in second place with 10 points.

Looking ahead, Argentina faces a critical encounter against Brazil, another powerhouse of South American football. This loss to Uruguay has exposed vulnerabilities in the Argentine squad, raising questions about their readiness to face Brazil. As Messi and his team prepare for this high-stakes match, they will be keen to rediscover their best form and avoid a second consecutive defeat in their quest for World Cup qualification.
