After a hiatus of five years, Hong Kong is set to welcome the Lunar New Year Cup back to its shores, featuring an extraordinary lineup of football legends including World Cup winners Francesco Totti, Marco Materazzi, and Carles Puyol. Scheduled for February 13, 2024, this exhibition match will bring together renowned players who have made their mark on the world stage, offering an unparalleled experience for football fans in the city.

Among the esteemed players set to grace the field are Italy’s iconic duo Totti and Materazzi, who were pivotal in their country’s 2006 World Cup triumph. They will be joined by Spanish defender Carles Puyol, known for his tenacity and leadership. This event marks the first visit to Hong Kong for several of these players, adding to the excitement and anticipation.

Paul Kam, the mastermind behind organizing the event, emphasized the effort and challenges involved in bringing together such a stellar group of players. “It’s easy to find a team to visit Hong Kong, but to bring 17, 18 players to town at the same time is difficult and challenging,” he noted. Kam also highlighted the role these players will play in promoting Hong Kong, not just through their presence but also through their vast social media reach.

The Lunar New Year Cup, a long-standing tradition since 1908, will also feature other celebrated players like Wesley Sneijder and Juan Sebastian Veron. Rumors suggest that Brazilian legend Rivaldo, a former World Cup and Ballon d’Or winner, might join the lineup in the upcoming announcement.

Hong Kong will field its own team comprising local football stars like Yapp Hung-fai, Fan Chun-yip, and Chan Siu-ki, among others, showcasing the talent and spirit of the city’s football scene.

The Lunar New Year Cup is part of a series of football friendlies that aim to reignite the passion for the sport in Hong Kong. These matches, including appearances by Luis Figo, Paul Scholes, Michael Owen, and Lionel Messi with his Inter Miami team, signify Hong Kong’s growing prominence as a hub for international football events.

Eric Fok Kai-shan, the chairman of the Hong Kong Football Association, expressed his ambition to bring more football matches to the city, underscoring Hong Kong’s status as an international city in Asia and its commitment to promoting local football.

Tickets for the Lunar New Year Cup will be available later this month, with prices ranging from HK$180 to HK$980, offering fans a chance to witness football history being made in Hong Kong.
