AIA Carnival Returns to Hong Kong with New Attractions and Live Performances

TravelAIA Carnival Returns to Hong Kong with New Attractions and Live Performances

The AIA Carnival, a winter staple in Hong Kong since 2014, is set to make a grand return to the Central Harbourfront on December 21, following a four-year hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic. This year’s edition goes beyond the traditional rides and game booths, introducing a 1,052-seat marquee, transforming it into a more dynamic live entertainment venue.

Central to this year’s carnival is the Gandeys Circus, a globally-renowned touring company, which will perform in a Big Top. The “The World of Circus” show, running for 65 minutes, promises to be a major highlight, featuring an array of international artists. Additionally, in partnership with Warner Music, the Big Top will welcome Cantopop stars, local musicians, and the Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra from mid-January, diversifying the entertainment offerings.

Michael Denmark, the carnival’s founder, shared insights gained during the event’s break. Understanding local trends, this year’s carnival will feature beloved yellow ducks, inspired by the giant inflatable rubber ducks in Victoria Harbour. The event will also offer numerous photo opportunities, including 36 large emoji faces, enhancing visitor engagement and experience.

A significant new feature is the Community Stage, aimed at showcasing diverse local talents and supporting non-profit organizations like ImpactHK, Mother’s Choice, and Love 21 Foundation. This initiative seeks to provide a platform for young talents and community members to perform and engage in activities such as workshops with circus artists. It also offers an opportunity for charities to raise funds and awareness for their causes.

Denmark hopes the carnival will attract not only locals but also visitors from the Greater Bay Area and abroad. He sees the event as a celebration of life and a contribution to revitalizing Hong Kong, creating employment, and bringing joy to the community. The picturesque backdrop of Hong Kong Harbour adds to the carnival’s charm, making it a unique and memorable event for attendees.

After over two decades in Hong Kong, Denmark expresses both professional pride and emotional fulfillment in bringing the AIA Carnival back to life. The carnival stands as a symbol of the city’s resilience and capacity for joy, offering a festive and inclusive experience for all who attend.
