China’s Tennis Comeback

The re-emergence of China on the tennis landscape is an exciting development for the sport

China has long been a force in the world of tennis, producing a number of top players over the years. However, in recent years, the country’s tennis landscape has gone somewhat quiet. But in time for the Australian Open, which kicked off in January 2022, China has re-emerged onto the scene with some impressive players.

One of the biggest names to watch out for is Liang En-shuo. The 22-year-old has been making waves in the tennis world with her impressive performances. In December 2021, she won the Oracle Challenger Series title in Houston, beating several established players along the way. This win saw her climb the world rankings to a career-high of 85. Liang En-shuo then went on to make a splash at the Australian Open, reaching the third round before losing to eventual finalist, Danielle Collins.

Another rising star from China is Wang Xinyu. The 19-year-old, who is currently ranked 131 in the world, made it to the second round of the Australian Open, where she faced Serena Williams. Despite losing to the 23-time Grand Slam champion, Wang Xinyu put up a good fight and showed that she has what it takes to compete with the best in the world.

In addition to these young players, China also has a number of experienced players who are still making their mark on the sport. One of these is Zhang Shuai, who is currently ranked 46 in the world. The 33-year-old has been a mainstay on the WTA tour for over a decade, and has won two WTA singles titles and four doubles titles in her career. At the Australian Open, Zhang Shuai made it to the third round before losing to eventual champion, Naomi Osaka.

Another experienced player from China is Zheng Saisai. The 28-year-old is currently ranked 53 in the world and has been playing on the WTA tour for over eight years. She has won two WTA doubles titles and has reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament twice in her career. Zheng Saisai made it to the second round of the Australian Open, where she lost to American Shelby Rogers.

The re-emergence of China on the tennis landscape is an exciting development for the sport. With a number of talented players, both young and experienced, the country has the potential to produce some great results in the coming years. It will be interesting to see how Liang En-shuo, Wang Xinyu, Zhang Shuai, Zheng Saisai, and the other players from China fare in the upcoming tournaments, and whether they can continue to make a splash on the world stage.
