In California, dogs are honing their wave-riding skills in preparation for the annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon, an event that brings together canines and their owners to surf the waves in Del Mar, just north of San Diego. Scheduled for September 8, the contest is hosted by the Helen Woodward Animal Center, a San Diego-area animal shelter known for its mission of “people help animals and animals help people.”
As the event approaches, surf dogs and their owners are busy practicing on soft surfboards, using specialized flotation devices, and adhering to ocean safety guidelines. Surf dog instructor Scott Owens, who frequently surfs with his two Dalmatians, Bentley and Bailey, is a regular participant. Owens notes that his dogs often draw a crowd with their impressive surfing maneuvers, whether it’s spinning on the board, riding backward, or simply laying down and catching the perfect wave.
“They just seem to know when the right time is to buckle down and catch that right wave,” Owens said, highlighting the unique bond between surfers and their canine companions. The Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon, now in its 18th year, was originally started by the Helen Woodward Animal Center to raise funds for pets and animal welfare programs.
The event will take place at Del Mar’s Dog Beach, one of the few beaches in the area where dogs are allowed to roam freely. The beach becomes a hub of excitement as dogs of all shapes and sizes take to the waves, showcasing their surfing skills and bringing joy to spectators.
The Surf-A-Thon isn’t just about fun and games; it also serves a greater purpose. Proceeds from the event support the Helen Woodward Animal Center’s various programs, including pet adoption, animal therapy, and education initiatives. The center’s work underscores the deep connection between humans and animals, a theme that is celebrated throughout the Surf-A-Thon.
The event also coincides with National Dog Day, which was celebrated on August 26 in the United States. Established by animal rescue advocate Colleen Page, National Dog Day honors the important role that dogs play in our lives and encourages adoption and responsible pet ownership.
As the Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon draws near, the excitement is building for this one-of-a-kind competition that not only showcases the talents of surfing dogs but also supports a worthy cause. Whether you’re a dog lover, a surfing enthusiast, or simply looking for a fun day at the beach, the Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon promises to be an unforgettable event filled with waves, wagging tails, and a whole lot of joy.
