CultureInclusive Artistry: Disabled Craftsmen Create Universiade Memorabilia

In the bustling city of Chengdu, capital of Southwest China’s Sichuan Province, excitement is building in anticipation of the upcoming 31st International University Sports Federation (FISU) Summer World University Games. As the event draws nearer, stores have begun stocking a myriad of licensed merchandise inspired by the games, kindling an unexpected consumer sensation.

With the Universiade scheduled to take place from July 28 to August 8, more than 400 retail stores have seen the introduction and brisk sales of over 1,000 licensed products. A cultural and creative workshop located in Chengdu’s Wenjiang District has made a noteworthy contribution to this offering, with their distinct paper quilling artworks gaining considerable popularity.

These stunning paper creations, meticulously hand-crafted using brightly-colored paper strips rolled and shaped into intricate designs, encapsulate various aspects of the Universiade’s spirit. From delicate floral and insect motifs to wind chimes and the games’ trademark panda mascot, each piece captures the vibrancy of the upcoming event.

Behind these fascinating artworks are an extraordinary group of craftsmen — all of whom are local residents with disabilities.

The workshop’s chief craftsman, Wang Linjiang, reported that their paper quilling pieces have seen significant demand both online and in retail outlets. He noted, “We receive new orders every day,” adding that the workshop artisans are currently immersed in fulfilling orders for the emblem of the Chengdu Universiade.

The Gongping subdistrict in Wenjiang District initiated vocational training for the local disabled population in 2016, intending to increase employment opportunities. The result was the establishment of a handicraft-focused workshop, which became the platform for Wang’s blossoming career in paper quilling.

Wang, a 34-year-old born with congenital disabilities, has insisted on leading a self-reliant life. This unyielding spirit led him to master the art of paper quilling, becoming an inspiring figure within the workshop. With the assistance of the subdistrict and social organizations, the workshop has grown to occupy a 300 square meter space.

Wang’s innovative creations have garnered several awards over the years, aiding in the establishment of a registered brand for the workshop. “We have more than 40 workers making paper quilling crafts at the workshop. They all suffer from different disabilities,” said Zhong Yanyan, a subdistrict official.

Following the unveiling of the emblem and mascot of Chengdu Universiade in December 2020, Wang and his colleagues were granted permission to recreate these designs as paper quilling artworks. Their Universiade-themed creations, officially licensed products, have been a hit, with over 7,000 pieces sold thus far.
